DURHAM, N.C.—Duke men's soccer senior
Colby Agu's goal in the 20th minute was enough for the Blue Devils tonight as they captured a 1-0 shutout victory over Denver at Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils held the Pioneers to just two shots over 90 minutes.
While the game did not feature many looks at goal, Duke (7-7-2) capitalized when it counted to regain its winning ways. Overall, Duke outshot Denver 10-2, putting five of those on frame. The Blue Devils carried a slight edge in possession, but were significantly more dangerous offensively as the backline did well to keep the Pioneers from exploiting the space in behind the defense.
"It was a well-deserved win," said head coach
John Kerr. "We worked really hard collectively and it was nice to see us be resilient.)
Denver (3-10-2) goalkeeper Will Palmquist made a couple early grabs to keep Duke off the scoreboard, but had little chance to stop Agu in the 20th minute. Senior
Daniele Proch, Duke's playmaker, headed the ball towards Agu running through and a somewhat fortunate bounce off a Pioneer defender put the ball right at Agu's feet with a one-on-one with Palmquist. The Cary, N.C., native calmly slipped it to the left corner for his third goal of the year and the 1-0 lead.
Duke finished the opening period looking for a second goal as a dagger to the Pioneers, but couldn't find space and convert.
"I wasn't as happy with our offensive play," Kerr said. "We gave the ball away too easily, but to be fair they defended deep and took away a lot of our options. We need to do a better job in the attacking third, but overall pleased with the group."
The second half was much of the same for both squads. Duke did well to defend and keep the ball in front and not allow the Pioneers any quality chances at goal.
Duke junior Kristofer
Garðarsson sent a free kick from 25 yards out just over the bar, while
Daniel Wright and
Brandon Williamson also had looks at goal that skipped wide.
In goal,
Will Pulisic came off his line a couple times to pull in corner kicks and crosses, but was never truly tested en route to picking up his sixth shutout of the year. Palmquist finished with four saves in 90 minutes.
Duke closes out its regular season Friday against No. 22 Virginia Tech. The Blue Devils and Hokies kick off at 7 p.m., on ACC Network Extra. Duke's nine seniors will be honored prior to the game for Senior Night. In addition, the ACC Championship seeding will be determined with the outcome of all of Friday night's ACC contests.
