DURHAM, N.C. – The ninth-ranked Duke women's soccer team (8-1-7, 3-0-6 ACC) used three second-half goals to cruise to a 4-1 victory over Syracuse (3-11-2, 1-7-1 ACC) Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.
"I thought we really pushed through in the second half," said head coach
Robbie Church. "We played on their half of the field mostly in the second half. I'm happy for our seniors. We had a nice weekend to honor our seniors, and to send them out with a win was big time. Hopefully that gets us back on our field again, and that won't be the last time they're on our home field. It was important to get that win for postseason play."
The Blue Devils battled from behind in the first half, as Syracuse grabbed a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 32
nd minute of action. Duke answered back with a goal less than four minutes later to even things at one apiece, before reeling off three scores in the second period to power to its third victory of conference action. With the result, the Blue Devils improve their winning streak over Syracuse to four games, while also extending their unbeaten streak to 14 games, marking the current second-longest in the ACC.
The Orange broke into the scoring column at the 31:24 mark, as Sydney Brackett registered her second goal of the season to make it a 1-0 contest.
Duke did not take long to respond, as junior
Caitlin Cosme recorded her first career goal in the 36
th minute to tie things at 1-1. Junior
Karlie Paschall delivered a cross into the box on a corner kick, before Cosme sent the ball into the back of the net for her first career score to even the tally at one apiece. The 1-1 score would hold for the final 10 minutes of the first 45 as the two teams headed into the halftime break deadlocked at one.
The Blue Devils moved ahead in the 57
th minute to grab the lead, as freshman
Julia Hannon registered her second goal of the season. Hannon connected on a pass from sophomore
Marykate McGuire to make it a 2-1 contest to give Duke a lead that it would not relinquish.
Junior
Tess Boade joined in on the scoring action in in the 69
th minute, recording her third goal of the season. After receiving the throw-in from sophomore
Delaney Graham, Boade worked the ball to the left corner of the box before bending a shot towards the left corner post that sailed past the Syracuse goalkeeper's outstretched hands into the back of the net.
Duke received its fourth and final goal from McGuire, who notched her team-leading ninth score of the season. The Duke sophomore completed a sequence from the duo of Graham and junior
Lily Nabet to set the tally at 4-1, the eventual final.
The Blue Devils closed out the contest with the advantage in both shots (20-7) and corner kicks (8-2), while limiting the Orange to just one shot in the first half.
The afternoon began with Senior Day festivities, as the Blue Devils honored 2019 Senior Class, including:
Emma Carlson,

Mackenzie Coles,
