DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team swept Wake Forest 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-22) Wednesday evening in midweek action in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
With the victory, Duke improves to 9-13 (2-7 ACC) as Wake Forest drops to 11-9 (1-8 ACC).
"I'm really excited our team could come out and execute tonight and get a win here at home," head coach
Jolene Nagel said. "They certainly have been working very hard in practice. We've come very close these last few weeks but were unable to finish so tonight it was great to come out, execute and sustain the focus we needed to finish."
Duke was led by
Payton Schwantz with 10 kills and only three errors to hit .350 percent while freshman
Lizzie Fleming had six kills and zero errors for a .462 hitting percentage. Defensively, libero
Mackenzie Cole tallied 21 digs for her second 20+ dig game of the season.
The Blue Devils jumped out to an early 10-4 lead in the first set to force the Demon Deacons into a timeout. Wake Forest attempted to bounce back but Duke continued to pull away to take the first set 25-14 as the Blue Devils hit .219 with seven kills from Schwantz. Duke added six blocks in the opening frame to limit Wake Forest to just a -.036 hitting percentage.
The Blue Devils carried their momentum into the second set as Cole picked up nine digs and allowed Duke to hit .278 percent to cruise to a 25-17 second-set victory.
Trailing 11-7 in the third and what would become the final set, Duke tied it up at 16 all as Cole registered her second ace of the game to give Duke its second ACC victory of the year.
Caroline Kuhn paced the Demon Deacons with nine kills.
Duke will remain at home and welcome Virginia Tech Friday, Oct. 25 for a 6:30 p.m., matchup on ACCNX.
