Duke Finishes Time at ITA Regionals

DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke's men's tennis team's run at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships came to an end in the Doubles Semifinals on Monday at the Cary Tennis Park.
"Overall there were a lot of positives from this tournament," Duke head coach Ramsey Smith said. "We have made some big jumps since the start of the fall."
Duke's doubles teams of second seed Nick Stachowiak and Sean Sculley and 9-16 seed Andrew Zhang and Michael Heller both advanced to the semifinals before falling.
Stachowiak and Sculley defeated Frankel and Ponce of Elon in the quarterfinals by winning 10-6 in a third set tiebreaker after splitting sets 6-4, 4-6. The veteran duo's time came to an end as they were tripped up in the semifinals 6-3, 6-2 to the three seed Kiger and Soendergaard of North Carolina.
First time partners Zhang and Heller cruised through the quarterfinals by a 6-0, 6-2 margin before seeing their run come to an end in a tight semifinals match. The freshman tandem came up just short of a finals appearance, falling to Munns and Bhangdia of Furman in a third set tiebreaker, 6-4, 3-6, 10-8.
By advancing to the quarterfinals of the Carolina Regional, both Duke duos are eligible for an at large bid to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Newport Beach, Calif. Nov. 6-10. 32 doubles teams will advance to the event.
Earlier in the week, Duke dominated the early rounds of the singles competitions with five players advancing to the Round of 16. By advancing to that round, Stachowiak, Zhang, Heller, Garrett Johns and Edu Güell made themselves eligible for at large bids in singles. 64 players will make up the singles draw at the event.
"We have one of the toughest regions in the country," Smith said. "This has been a fun group of guys to coach and we are on a good track. We're excited to keep working hard and keep improving."
Duke continues its fall season at the Lakewood Ranch, Fla. at the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Nov. 1-3. Four Blue Devils will represent Duke at the three-day event.
