ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- The No. 10 Duke men's golf team captured its first tournament win of the season, holding off a stacked field to claim the 2019 Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate title on Sunday at the Golf Club of Georgia's Lakeside Course. The Blue Devils shot one-under 287 on Sunday and were two-under 862 for the tournament as the lone team to finish under par.
Led by the sixth-place finish from junior
Evan Katz, Duke was the only team to have three finish in top 10 along with junior
Adrien Pendaries (T-7th) and senior
Steven DiLisio (T-9th).
Katz shot three-under 213 (70-71-72) for his best career finish in a full-field event. Pendaries was a shot back at two-under 214 (69-71-74), with DiLisio posting a one-under 215 (71-72-72).
No. 9 Pepperdine, which raced out the first-round lead, finished two strokes back of Duke in second place at even par, followed by No. 16 Texas A&M (+1), No. 4 Wake Forest (+4) and UCLA (+8) in the top five. The 14-team field featured seven Top 25 programs, including host and No. 1 Georgia Tech (+11, 10th), No. 13 North Carolina (+10, T-7th) and No. 15 Clemson (+10, T-7th).
The victory marked the 86th team tournament title in program history and the 24th under 12th-year head coach
Jamie Green – 19 have come over the last eight seasons, including at least one in each of the last six seasons.
"There were a lot of good teams out here – they're all highly ranked and it's always a terrific field that comes here," said Green. "That's a testament to the type of tournament Georgia Tech runs and a great golf course. I was pleased and proud of our guys. It was something that has been building for us, so it was nice for our guys to see the reward and be able to take the trophy home."
Katz was the Blue Devils leader, carding three rounds of even par or better, including Sunday's even-par 72. The junior's steady final round included two birdies and two bogeys, and with his team leading Pepperdine by two down the stretch, he parred 17 and 18 to help seal the win.
"This is a win to be extremely proud of," said Katz. "Not only did we beat a very strong field, but most importantly we won the battle against ourselves. We were tough and resilient from start to finish, with everybody making huge contributions to the win. We were able to stay tough down a difficult finishing stretch and make some big putts when we needed them most, which ended up making the difference."
Pendaries shot 74 on Sunday and finished the tournament in a tie for seventh at two-under par. DiLisio also played three rounds of par or better, including his even-par 72 on Sunday. His birdie on the par-three 17th on Sunday helped give the Blue Devils cushion over Pepperdine.
Senior
Chandler Eaton, playing in his hometown on his home course, made a Sunday charge and posted a two-under 70. He finished tied for 35th at five-over, but his four birdies in the final round were crucial for the Blue Devils.
"This is so cool winning this tournament," said Eaton. "I grew up coming out and watching this event when I was a little kid and I remember thinking how cool it'd be to just play in it. Now we've won it. Unbelievable. Our team is so strong, we can play with anyone. I'm just so proud to be on this team and I am so proud of my teammates."
Junior
Qi wen Wong posted a 73 on Sunday and finished the tournament in a tie for 62nd at 12-over.
In three stroke-play tournaments this season, Duke has posted a top 10 finish in each – second at the
Rod Myers, seventh at the Nike Collegiate and Sunday's victory at the GCOG. The Blue Devils are back in action October 28-29 at the Cypress Point Classic in Pebble Beach, Calif.
