TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The men's and women's cross country teams participated at the Pre-National Invitational on the LaVern Gibson Championship Course Saturday morning.
The Duke women earned 14th out of 37 schools, totaling 444 points, while the men placed 24th out of 38 schools with 587 points. A total of 252 runners competed in the women's 6k blue race and 257 runners ran in the men's 8k blue race.
For the women, senior Lindsay Billings led the way with a time of 20:55.7, good for 48th place. Junior Michaela Reinhart came in second for Duke, clocking a time of 21:01.1 for 59th. Rounding out the top-three were sophomores Elizabeth Reneau in 96th (21:26.1), Helen Williams in 118th (21:36.8) and Leigha Torino in 132nd (21:46.2).
"Today was a solid day," said women's head coach Rhonda Riley. "It was a great chance to gage where we are at. We have more work to do and we are confident in where we need to be at the end season."
"Lindsay ran a very smart race," said Riley. "She really tested herself and put herself in a good position for her to be our leading scorer."
For the men, freshman Zach Kinne led the way with an 81st place time of 24:40.4. Junior CJ Ambrosio earned second for Duke, clocking a time of 24:45.0 for 90th. Freshman Sam Rivera placed 135th with a time of 25:08.2, while senior Tom Sullivan finished right behind him in 136th (25:09.0). Junior Alex Miley rounded out the top five for the Blue Devils, earning 145th (25:15.9).
"It was a tough day," said men's head coach Norm Ogilvie. "Guy's just didn't rise to the occasion when they needed too, but this happens in sports. I told them all season we can run fast and our team in Greenville ran well yesterday. We are now going to prepare for the ACC Championship in two weeks."
The men now own an overall record of 57-24 and are 4-4 in the ACC.
Duke is back in action Friday, November first in Blacksburg, Va., for the ACC Championships. Time is yet to be determined.
