
Duke Dominates Day One of ITA Carolina Region

DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke men's tennis team dominated day one of the ITA Carolina Region Championships with all seven Blue Devils playing in the singles draw advancing past their first-round matches and six of the seven advancing to the Round of 32.
Veteran Blue Devils No. 59 Nick Stachowiak and Edu Guell breezed through the first two rounds of play. Stachowiak topped Bryce Keim of Wofford 6-0, 6-1 before taking down Teodor Giusca of Clemson 6-3, 6-4. Guell defeated Connor Williamson of Winthrop 6-0, 6-0 in his opening round before ending Carlos Kelaidas of Clemson's run in tournament 6-4, 6-2.
Freshmen Andrew Zhang and Garrett Johns kept control through the first two rounds as they both recorded a pair of wins to get them to the Round of 32. Zhang defeated Griffin Babineauz of UNC-Wilmington 6-3, 6-0 in his opening match. After a slow start, Zhang rattled off nine games in a row to advance. In the Round of 64, Zhang continued his form and cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Javi Casaola of Wofford. Johns topped Julian Chousa of Wofford 6-4, 6-4 before defeating Constandinos Chrostoforou of Charlotte 6-1, 6-4 later in the day.
Two more Duke freshmen, Samuel Rubell and Michael Heller, broke into the Round of 32 with a pair of wins Friday. Rubell won a couple of three-set matches, beating Tommy Mason of Davidson 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 before topping the 15 seed Austin Hussey of UNCW 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Heller recorded the upset of the day in the Round of 64 by knocking off No. 76 Melios Efstathiou, the fourth overall seed in the draw. Prior to that win, Heller made it through the first round of play with a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win over Fernando Barnardes of South Carolina Upsate. Â
Junior Sean Sculley won his opening match with Jaxson Wiley of Clemson 6-0, 6-3 before seeing his time in the singles draw end in the next round. Â
Doubles play begins tomorrow at Cary Tennis Park. Duke has four teams in the draw, with three of them being seeded. Sculley and Stachowiak earned the No. 2 overall seed while the duos of Zhang/Heller and Guell/Rubell earn 9-16 marks. Spencer Furman will make his first appearance on the courts as he partners with Johns for Dukes fourth doubles tandem.
