DURHAM, N.C. – Fresh off its first top-10 win of the season, the ninth-ranked Duke women's soccer team is set for another ranked matchup Friday evening at No. 14 Louisville.
The top 15 match is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium, and will be broadcasted on ACC Network Extra.
Recapping Last Week
The Blue Devils earned a total of four points in the ACC standings last week, battling to a double-overtime draw against third-ranked North Carolina before defeating No. 9 Clemson at home to close the weekend.
The Blue Devils created several scoring opportunities but were unable to find the back of the net against the Tar Heels, while North Carolina held an 18-6 advantage in shots in the scoreless affair Thursday night at Koskinen Stadium. The result marked the third consecutive draw for Duke this season, and only the third tie between the two schools across the 46 all-time matchups.
A pair of braces from the sophomore duo of
Marykate McGuire and
Mackenzie Pluck propelled the Blue Devils to a 4-1 victory over ninth-ranked Clemson Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium. Duke's four goals marked the team's most goals in an ACC matchup since last year's match at Syracuse, while also giving the squad its first win of the season against a top 10 foe.
Duke vs. Louisville
Friday's matchup between Duke and Louisville marks only the seventh all-time matchup between the two ACC foes. Duke holds the all-time series advantage over Louisville, 2-0-4, including a two-game winning streak over the Cardinals. The Blue Devils are 1-0-1 across the two matchups in Louisville. Most recently, Duke defeated Louisville, 2-1, in Durham, marking the program's first win over the Cardinals at home. Head coach
Robbie Church owns a 5-2-5 career mark against Louisville.
Pluck Tabbed ACC Player of the Week
After posting an impressive outing to help the Blue Devils to a 4-1 win over Clemson, sophomore
Mackenzie Pluck was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week.
Pluck picked up an ACC weekly laurel for the first time in her career, also marking the first conference weekly honor for Duke this season. The Duke forward became the second Blue Devil to earn offensive POTW honors outright, joining former teammate
Taylor Racioppi, who garnered the recognition a season ago on Oct. 16, 2018.
TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week Honors
The Blue Devils have had a TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week honoree for six weeks in a row, most recently being redshirt junior
Brooke Heinsohn. Heinsohn was named to this week's team of the week as the team's goalkeeper for her performances against No. 3 North Carolina and No. 9 Clemson, after being selected as an honorable mention last weekend. The Norfolk, Mass., native joins the trio of seniors
Mia Gyau and
Ella Stevens, and sophomore
Mackenzie Pluck in players who have received Team of the Week honors in 2019. Pluck has received the recognition twice this season, while Gyau and Stevens have each earned the honor once.
Lucky Friday
This week's match against Louisville marks the first Friday matchup for the Blue Devils this season. Last season, the Blue Devils posted an impressive 2-0-0 record in Friday matchups.
Unbeaten Streak Going Strong
Duke holds an 11-game unbeaten streak, which serves as the second-longest in the ACC. The Blue Devils have not been beaten since the second game of the season, where they fell to then-No. 2 North Carolina on the road in a non-conference matchup in the final game of the 2019 Carolina Nike Classic. Duke's nine-game mark trails only top-ranked Virginia in the conference, who holds a 14-game unbeaten streak. Other schools in the ACC who hold multiple-game unbeaten streaks include North Carolina (six games), No. 16 Louisville (five games), NC State (four games) and Notre Dame (three games).
Drawing NCAA Records
The Blue Devils have earned double-overtime draws in three of their last four matchups, pushing their draw total to five on the season. Duke battled to a scoreless draw with then-No. 13 Georgetown in its home opener before recording a 1-1 tie in the ACC opener against NC State in double overtime. Prior to the team's most recent matchup with Clemson, the Blue Devils battled to three consecutive draws against top-ranked Virginia and then-No. 23 Virginia Tech on the road, before reaching a scorless draw against third-ranked North Carolina. Duke's five ties this season serve as the most in a single season since 2015, while being two shy of the school record--seven in 2007. The Blue Devils are also one scoreless draw away from tying the NCAA record for most scoreless draws in a season.
Duke in the Polls
Duke checked in at No. 9 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll this week as one of five ACC teams in the top 15, and one of six schools ranked in the top 25. Additionally, the Blue Devils are ranked ninth in the Soccer America Top 25, and 10th in the
TopDrawerSoccer rankings. Duke is ranked for the 55th straight week in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, dating back to the ninth week of the 2015 season, when the Blue Devils were ranked No. 22.
