DURHAM, N.C. – In a top 15 matchup of the Tobacco Road rivals, the 11
th-ranked Duke women's soccer team battled to a 0-0 draw against third-ranked North Carolina in double overtime Thursday night at Koskinen Stadium in front of a season-high crowd of 3,176 fans.
The Blue Devils (6-1-5, 1-0-4 ACC) created several scoring opportunities but were unable to find the back of the net against the Tar Heels (11-1-1, 4-0-1 ACC), while North Carolina held an 18-6 advantage in shots in the scoreless affair.
"I'm just really proud of how we played," said head coach
Robbie Church. "This team is relentless. I don't know if I can remember coaching a tougher team. The next person just has to step up and play. Today we did a better job of making decisions. We had our moments and there were times where the opportunities were there. We defended well as a team tonight."
The result marked only the third consecutive draw for the Blue Devils this season and only the third tie between the two schools across the 46 all-time matchups.
Redshirt junior
Brooke Heinsohn picked up her third consecutive solo shutout—all against ranked opponents—of the season, registering the team's eighth overall shutout performance of the season. With the performance, the Blue Devils now held two of the nation's top three teams scoreless across their last three matchups.
"It's not everyday that you get to play in an in-state rivalry like Duke and North Carolina," said Heinsohn. "I think majority of the time, what gets us fired up is how much people doubt us. We've proven people wrong every chance that we've gotten. We've gotten three straight shutouts on the backline and we're just doing phenomenal. I'm proud of this team."
Heinsohn closed out the contest with a season-high eight saves, while facing a season-high tying 18 shots to pick up her 16
th career shutout.
Duke finished the contest with three shots on goal, with the trio of juniors
Taylor Mitchell and
Caitlin Cosme and sophomore
Delaney Graham each recording an attempt on target. North Carolina held the slight advantage in corner kicks, 6-4.
The Blue Devils remain home to close out the weekend, welcoming another top 10 opponent to town, for the team's fourth consecutive ranked matchup. Duke is set to host ninth-ranked Clemson Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium, marking another top 15 match. The contest is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at Koskinen Stadium, with action airing live on ACC Network Extra.
