DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University senior midfielder
Brandon Williamson garnered spots on both the College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week following his standout performance in the Blue Devils' rival win at North Carolina Friday. These are the first weekly honors of the season for Williamson.
In his final career regular season matchup against the Tar Heels, Williamson registered a goal and an assist to lead unranked Duke to a 3-2 road victory over the No. 14 Tar Heels. In addition to a goal and an assist, Williamson' ability to possess the ball and quarterback the offense helped the Blue Devils to a crucial road win.
With the Blue Devils trailing 2-0 midway through the first half, Williamson provided the assist on Duke's first goal and then scored the tying goal. After a corner kick bounced out to him 25 yards from goal, Williamson found a wide-open
Daniel Wright, who dribbled into the box and rocketed a shot past the Tar Heel goalkeeper.
Just 12 minutes into the second half, Williamson sent a perfect ball to
Daniele Proch on the left side. After nifty footwork from
Proch, the Gainesville, Va., native made his run into the box and one-timed a shot into the left corner to tie the game.
Williamson has four points from a goal and two assists this season. Duke's win in Chapel Hill was the first road victory over North Carolina since 1999.
Duke returns home for a two-game stand against Wright State, Oct. 1 and Syracuse, Oct. 4. Kickoffs are set for 7 p.m., on ACC Network Extra.
