DURHAM, N.C. – With the 2019 season opener just under a month away, head coach Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are excited to announce left-handed pitcher Clark Klitenic as part of the Blue Devils' most recent recruiting class.
“Clark Klitenic is a left-handed pitcher that we're really excited about,” said Pollard. “He's got a crossfire delivery that we think has got a chance to be really tough on left-handed hitters. He's been up to 90 miles per hour, and we really like his breaking ball and the fact that there's a lot of deception there. He comes from a program where he's been very well-coached in high school, so he'll be ready to hit the ground running when he gets here this summer.”
Klitenic enjoyed great success during his junior campaign, leading St. Albans to an Interstate Athletic Conference championship. The Bulldogs finished with a 17-8 record behind Klitenic's impressive 7-1 record, which came across 11 appearances, including nine starts and three complete games. Klitenic closed out the 2018 season with a 1.05 ERA (9 ER/59.2 IP), collecting 77 strikeouts while only allowing 26 hits and no home runs. In a decisive game three of the championship series, he tossed a shutout and struck out seven – including the side in the final inning – to clinch the title for St. Albans in a 7-0 victory.
The southpaw earned numerous accolades across 2018, including being named to the Washington Post All-Metro First Team, USA Today All-District of Columbia First Team and DC State Athletic Association First Team. Klitenic was selected as the 2018 Interstate Athletic Conference Player of the Year, and competed in the 2018 Big 26 Baseball Classic for Team Maryland.
A two-sport athlete, Klitenic also competed on his high school soccer team at St. Albans, lettering in both 2017 and 2018 as a defender.
Klitenic is rated as a top 500 prospect by Perfect Game, and the No. 88 left-handed pitcher in the 2019 class. The organization also lists Klitenic as the No. 6 overall prospect and the top-rated left-handed pitcher in the state of Maryland.
Klitenic is part of Duke's 12-member 2019 recruiting class along with LHP Michael Foltz (Myrtle Beach, N.C.), 1B/OF Britt Fuller (Charlotte, N.C.), RHP Marcus Johnson (Fontana, Calif.), INF/RHP Thomas Keehn (Highland, Md.), C Chad Knight (Westport, Conn.), INF Grant Norris (Somerset, Pa.), INF Graham Pauley (Milton, Ga.), RHP Billy Seidl (Wellesley, Mass.), OF Sam Siani (Glendale, Pa.), RHP Colten Smith (Colmar, Pa.) and RHP Henry Williams (Darien, Conn.). GoDuke.com is set to release details on all 12 of the newest Blue Devils in the coming weeks.
