GREENVILLE, S.C. – Duke women's tennis senior Kaitlyn McCarthy and sophomore Ema Lazic opened the first day of the 2018 fall campaign at the Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic with three combined victories.
McCarthy and Lazic kicked off competition Friday morning in doubles and advanced to the championship match. The duo defeated Tijana Spasojevic/Fernanda Labrana of Texas, 8-3, before downing South Carolina's Paige Cline/Silvia Chinellato, 8-4. Duke will take on Magda Adaloglou/Emma Antonaki of Mississippi State Saturday at 9 a.m.
McCarthy, ranked No. 84 in the preseason Intercollege Tennis Association rankings, continued her strong start through singles action by defeating No. 95 Bojana Markovic of Texas (6-4, 6-2). Lazic fell to Ohio State's Danielle Wolf (6-2, 6-4).
McCarthy will return to the court Saturday against Adaloglou in the semifinal round at 10:15 a.m., before Lazic competes at 11:15 a.m. against Wake Forest's Mary Caroline Meredith.
