COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 19 Duke rowing team returned to action Saturday at Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River in Columbus, Ohio, as they faced off against No. 4 Ohio State, No. 15 Michigan State and San Diego. The Blue Devils came away with four first-place finishes and six second place.
Duke sent the V8, 2V8, 3V8, V4 and 2V4 boats into action. The V8, 2V8, V4 and 2V4 all defeated No. 15 Michigan State in their respective morning races.
“Duke did some nice work today,” said head coach Megan Cooke Carcagno. “It was fun to see our top 4 boats race out in front of No. 15 Michigan State. I was very proud of all of our boats, but our 2V8 really stood out to me. They've had a lot of line-up changes this week, so with only one row together, they were able to race well and stay out front. We took care of business and I think it put Duke in a good position heading into the last regular season races. A big thanks to Ohio State for hosting and to San Diego and Michigan State for competing.”
In the morning session, Duke went head-to-head against the Spartans while the V8 and 2V8 also battled San Diego.
The 3V8 kicked things off in the morning with a second-place finish in 7:14.87, trailing only Michigan State (6:58.9). In the afternoon, the Buckeyes claimed the top spot in 6:47.2 as Duke clocked in at 7:02.15.
The 2V4 took the course next, capturing the first top finish of the day in a time of 7:43.6, edging out Michigan State (7:45.33). The squad then took on the Buckeyes in the afternoon and came in second (7:41.38).
The V4 kept the first-place finishes rolling as they crossed the finish line in 7:27.7 to Michigan State's 7:30.39. In the afternoon, the Blue Devils trailed Ohio State to clock in at 7:23.45.
In the second-to-last race of the morning, Duke's 2V8 secured another first place in 6:50.5, besting Michigan State (6:53.07) and San Diego (7:11.7). The Buckeyes took first in the afternoon session as the Blue Devils posted a time of 6:39.8.
Wrapping up the morning session and the competition was Duke's V8 boat. The squad placed first this morning in 6:36.5 before notching second in 6:31.75
“In the afternoon session, Ohio State was able to use their experience and speed to get out on us early,” Cooke Carcagno said. “You have to be ready for that when you go against one of the best teams in the country. I'm proud of our team, but I don't think we raced to our potential. Regardless, we learned a lot about what we need to do next week.”
The Blue Devils will return to action next Saturday, April 28 for the Dale England Cup in Bloomington, Ind.
