Duke Drops 4-1 Decision at ECU

GREENVILLE, N.C. – In the final game of back-to-back road midweeks, the Duke Blue Devils (16-12) dropped a 4-1 decision to the East Carolina Pirates (14-16) Wednesday night in Greenville, N.C.
ECU capitalized on the long ball to help plate two runs in the opening frame and two more in the fourth, while Duke struggled to find its groove at the plate. The Blue Devils nearly broke through in the opening frame, loading the bases thanks to a Rachel Abboud double that was sandwiched between two walks. A pop up would end the threat and bring the Pirates up to the plate for the first time in the contest, as they used a two-run homer to take a 2-0 lead.
Two more runs came home for the Pirates in the fourth thanks to a one-out solo home run to left, followed by bases-loaded walk on the backend of the frame.
Duke was able to cut the lead to 4-1 in the fifth with an RBI single from Raine Wilson that was set up by back-to-back base hits from Jameson Kavel and Dominique Salinas. The Blue Devils looked poised to score more with the bases loaded before ECU shut down the threat with a fly out to right.
The Blue Devils made one last comeback attempt in the seventh, as Kavel led off the frame with a single to center. However, that would be all for Duke, as ECU retired the next three batters to seal the victory.
Kavel and Salinas led the way for Duke's offense, both going 2-for-4 on the day. Peyton St. George (4-4) earned the start, going 3.1 innings with three strikeouts.
Duke returns to action this weekend at home, hosting the Louisville Cardinals in ACC action at the Duke Softball Stadium Friday, March 23 – Sunday, March 25. All three contests will be live streamed on ACC Network Extra, which fans can access through WatchESPN.com and the ESPN app.
