Chen, Chi Set for ITA Fall Nationals

DURHAM, N.C. – Two Duke women's tennis players will compete in the 2018 Oracle ITA Fall National Championships Nov. 7-11 at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex in Surprise, Ariz.
The championships will feature a 64-player singles draw for men and women, while men's and women's doubles will consist of a 32-team draw. Players qualified for the tournament through designated placings at earlier ITA National Championships and ITA Regional Championships.
The Blue Devils will be represented in the singles main draw by junior Meible Chi and sophomore Kelly Chen. Chi, No. 31 in the ITA preseason rankings, has played to a 9-2 overall ledger this fall while No. 12 Chen is 5-1 after both had flawless performances at the Kitty Harrison Invitational over the weekend.
“This is a great opportunity,” head coach Jamie Ashworth said. “They earned the opportunity to be at an event like this. Nothing has been given to either one of them. They have both played well this fall and this concludes our fall competitive season and it would be great for both of them to have a really good week and continue to build confidence as we head into January. Every match you play out here is a tough match. Everyone has earned their way here through play this fall. In saying that, everyone has been playing well. You're getting everyone at their best and it's a great opportunity to make a statement on where we are heading into January.”
Chen, the fifth seed, will face No. 47 Caroline Lampl of Stanford in the first round Wednesday at 10 a.m., EST before Chi, seeded seventh, takes on Florida State's No. 11 Carla Touly at 12 p.m., EST.
“We have to be competitive every point and value every point that we play,” Ashworth said. “They play so different but they both have specific things that we've been working on in practice. It's good to put themselves in pressure situations and it was good to get some matches in last weekend before playing this week.”

The singles finals Sunday at 12 p.m., EST will be available to a national audience live via ESPN3 and on the ESPN app, and later aired on ESPNU Tuesday, Nov. 13.
