WILMINGTON, N.C. – After falling behind by nine heading into the final round of the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C., the fourth-ranked Duke women's golf team carded a Sunday-best three-under, 285, to catapult into the lead late in the round. The Blue Devils passed second round leader, Arkansas, and concluded with a two-shot victory at the 6,166-yard, par 72 Country Club of Landfall Dye Course.
Duke senior Virginia Elena Carta and freshman Gina Kim finished the weekend tied for first, individually, with an even-par, 216. The victory for Carta was her second collegiate win and Kim's win was the first of her short career.
The Blue Devils finished with rounds of 297, 297 and 285 to finish with an 878, which were two shots better than South Carolina (881). Arkansas (892), Virginia (892) and Michigan (896) rounded out the top five teams. It marks the third time over the last four seasons Duke has won the team title (2017, 2015).
Duke made the late charge featuring a six-under-par ledger over the final six holes to complete the comeback. The victory concludes the fall season with the Blue Devils winning each of their final two tournaments.
A native of Udine, Italy, Carta turned in her third straight round of 72 Sunday, which included two birdies, two bogeys and 14 pars. After opening her round on hole No. 4, Carta suffered a bogey on No. 8, but came back with her first birdie of the day on the 366-yard, par four 10th to get back to even par. Three holes later she added another bogey to drop back to 1-over. Carta connected on six straight pars, before rolling in a clutch eight-foot birdie on the 122-yard, par three second hole to get back to even. She added a par to close the day with a 72. Carta hit 16 greens, 12 fairways and had 35 putts on the day.
“It's such a honor to win this tournament,” commented Carta. “It has been a very tough fall for me and to be able to finish it off with two team wins and an individual win means a lot. I'm very proud of our freshman, Gina, who really deserved a win and it's an honor for me to share it with her. She works as hard as anyone I've seen and is such a great teammate!”
The win for Carta was her first since winning the NCAA Individual title as a freshman in record fashion.
“I would have never been able to achieve this without Coach Brooks and Jon [Whithaus] beside me,” said Carta. “They have really pushed me all the way and have stayed next to me for three and a half years and always supported me with so much patience. When you get an individual win it's never really individual because of all people that worked with you through ups and downs. I can't thank enough everyone back at Duke for their support and help!”
Kim, who hails from Chapel Hill, N.C., also opened her day on the 511-yard, par five fourth. She had a hot start as she stuck her 50-degree wedge from 94 yards to within three feet and rolled in a birdie. After a bogey on No. 7, Kim was able to get back to even par with a 30-foot birdie putt. She suffered another bogey on No. 13, before going on a hot streak.
With four birdies over a span of five holes, Kim was able to jump up the leaderboard and into a tie for the lead. She connected on a 15-footer birdie putt on No. 15 and chipped in from 20 yards on No. 17 to get to two-under-par. On the par five 18th, Kim was on the green in two and two-putted for birdie from about 12 feet. Then, on hole No. 1, she hit her seven iron from 144 yards to within 10 feet and connected her sixth birdie of the day to get to four-under-par. She closed with a bogey on No. 3 to finish with a three-under, 69.
“It's because of my team and my coaches that I was able to win and I couldn't be any happier to share this awesome experience with them,” said Kim.
Kim's round in the 60s was the lowest of her career and her six birdies was also a career best. She hit 11 greens, eight fairways and had 27 putts in the final round.
Sophomore Miranda Wang turned in a season-best tied for 15th finish with rounds of 75, 74 and 73 to finish with a six-over, 222. A product of Beijing, China, Wang opened on hole No. 5 with a bogey, but connected on a birdie on No. 6 and then rolled in a 40-foot birdie on the 392-yard, par four ninth hole to get to one-under-par. She saved par on No. 12 with a 20-foot putt, while adding bogeys on No. 13 and No. 15. She came back with a birdie on No. 18 to get back to even for the day. Wang closed with a bogey on No. 3 to finish with a 73. She hit 12 fairways, 13 greens and had 31 putts on the day.
After struggling the first two days with over par rounds, sophomore Jaravee Boonchant closed strong with a one-under, 71, to finish in a tie for 24th. A native of Bangkok, Thailand, Boonchant opened her day on No. 5 and had bogeys on No. 7 and No. 14 to drop to two-over. She connected on her sixth career eagle on No. 18 to get back to even for the day. Boonchant added her lone birdie on the 345-yard, par four third hole on her way to closing with a 71.
Boonchant's six career eagles are already tied for sixth on Duke's all-time career charts.
Duke junior Ana Belac posted a final round of 77 on her way to finishing tied for 58th, after registering her first collegiate victory a year ago in Wilmington. As an individual, sophomore Hannah O'Sullivan carded a final round of 82 to finish in a tie for 90th.
“It's so special to share this win with the team,” added Carta. “I love every single one of my teammates and I'm so proud of them for what we did here at the Landfall. The team atmosphere is great and it is so much fun traveling together.”
Duke will next compete in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship Feb. 17-19 in New Orleans, La.
