CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Following matching a school record with a 17-under, 271, and taking the team lead on Friday, the Duke women's golf team maintained its lead at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational Saturday heading into the final round at the 6,379-yard, par 72 Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Duke owns a 15-under-par, 561, through 36 holes and leads by eight shots over Virginia (569). The Blue Devils carded a two-over-par, 290, in round two as only two teams shot under par for the day. Rounding out the top 10 teams were Arkansas (572), Wake Forest (576), South Carolina (578), Vanderbilt (583), Louisville (584), Furman (588), Clemson (592) and North Carolina (593).
The Blue Devils started strong Saturday and were seven-under-par early in the day, before closing with only six birdies over the final nine holes.
Senior Virginia Elena Carta had the hottest start of the day for Duke and was three-under-par through five holes on Saturday morning. She rolled in a 10-footer for birdie on No. 2, five-footer on No. 3 and a 20-footer for birdie on No. 5. Carta, who hails from Udine, Italy, suffered a double-bogey on No. 9, but would play her final nine holes at one-under-par with birdies on No. 10, No. 13 and No. 17 to finish with a 70. She hit 15 greens, 11 fairways and rolled 29 putts. It marked the first time in her career she notched back-to-back rounds with fewer than 30 putts.
Carta enters the final round in second place with a six-under, 138, and trails Wake Forest's Emilia Migliaccio (135) by three strokes.
Junior Ana Belac will head into the final round with a four-under, 140, and tied for sixth, after carding rounds of 68 and 72 the first two days. She opened her day with a par on No. 1 and then rolled in a 50-footer for birdie on the 343-yard, par four second hole. Belac, who is from Portoroz, Slovenia, added birdies on No. 6 and No. 8 from three feet each on her way to make the turn at three-under, 33.
On the back nine, Belac had four pars, four bogeys and rolled in a 15-footer for birdie on No. 13 as she finished with an even-par, 72. She hit 14 greens, 11 fairways and had 31 putts.
After opening the tournament with a six-under, 66, Friday, sophomore Jaravee Boonchant was held without a birdie on her way to shooting a 76 in round two. She will enter the final round tied for ninth with a two-under, 142.
Sophomore Miranda Wang had matched a career-low round of 69 on Friday, but was held to a 76 on the second day and will enter the final round tied for 20th with a one-over, 145. Wang, a native of Beijing, China, rolled in birdies on No. 3 and No. 6 and was one-under-par through seven holes. She closed the final 11 holes at five-over-par to finish with a 76.
A product of Chapel Hill, N.C., freshman Gina Kim turned in an even-par, 72, in round two as she registered three birdies on the day. She posted back-to-back birdies on No. 6 and No. 7 as he made the turn at even par. Kim closed the day with seven pars, one bogey and a birdie on No. 17. She hit 11 fairways, 14 greens and had 33 putts on day two.
Duke leads the field with 41 birdies over the first two days and a 14-under-par score on the par fives. The Blue Devils will be looking for their fifth team title at the Tar Heel Invitational out of the last six years and its 16th overall win in Chapel Hill. Duke head coach Dan Brooks will be going for his 134th career victory if the Blue Devils can hold on.
In the final round, all teams will tee off at 9:15 a.m., with a shotgun start. The Blue Devils will be on holes one, two and three along with Virginia and Arkansas.
