DURHAM, N.C. – For the fifth straight year, a Duke University women's golfer has been tabbed a nominee for the Honda Sports Award for golf as junior Leona Maguire was one of four selections announced by Chris Voelz, Executive Director of THE College Women's Sports Awards (CWSA).
Along with Maguire, Jennifer Kupcho (Wake Forest), Andrea Lee (Stanford) and Monica Vaughn (Arizona State) were the four nominees selected.
The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 41 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies “the best of the best in collegiate athletics.” The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2017 Honda Cup which will be presented on a live telecast on CBS Sports Network on Monday, June 26, 2017, in downtown Los Angeles.
The nominees were chosen by a combination of NCAA Championship finishes and national golf rankings. The Honda Sport Award winner for Golf will be announced next week after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote.
A native of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire was selected a Honda Award nominee for the second time, after making the ballot in 2015. The 2015 and 2017 PING WGCA National Player of the Year, Maguire carded the second-lowest stroke average in NCAA history, which was also a Duke and ACC record, of 70.29. She was the runner-up at the 2015 and 2017 NCAA Championship, while also totaling three victories, eight top-five finishes, nine rounds in the 60s and did not finish lower than tied sixth in 10 tournaments on the year. Maguire was a WGCA First Team All-America and also won the GolfStat Cup for the lowest stroke average during the 2016-17 campaign.
Honda Sport award winners will be presented with the honor during on-campus presentations throughout the year and all Honda Sport award winners become a finalist for the prestigious 2017 Honda Cup award presented in June.
Seven different times a Blue Devil have won the Honda Award for golf – Candy Hannemann (2000-01), Virada Nirapathpongporn (2001-02), Anna Grzebien (2004-05), Amanda Blumenherst (2006-07, 2007-08), Celine Boutier (2013-14) and Virginia Elena Carta (2015-16).
THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards has honored the nation's top NCAA women athletes for 41 years, recognizing superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service. Since commencing its sponsorship in 1986, Honda has provided more than $3.1 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women's athletics programs at the institutions.
