DURHAM, N.C. – Following a very impressive campaign with the Duke women's basketball program in 2016-17, the honors keep coming in for Blue Devil redshirt junior Lexie Brown as she received Third Team Associated Press All-America accolades Monday.
Brown becomes the 12th Blue Devil to be named to one of the top three Associated Press teams in school history. It marks the eighth time out of the last nine years a Duke standout has been voted to an Associated Press All-America team.
The third team accolade for Brown marks the second time in her career she has received Associated Press All-America honors as she was voted as a sophomore at Maryland in 2014-15.
Earning first team honors were Kelsey Plum (Washington), A'ja Wilson (South Carolina), Katie Lou Samuelson (UConn), Napheesa Collier (UConn) and Brionna Jones (Maryland), while Kelsey Mitchell (South Carolina), Brianna Turner (Notre Dame), Gabby Williams (UConn), Chantel Osahor (Washington) and Alexis Peterson (Syracuse) were named to the second team.
A native of Suwanee, Ga., Brown made a splash with the Blue Devils in 2016-17 averaging 18.3 points, 3.9 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 2.8 steals. The 5-9 guard helped the Blue Devils go from unranked in the preseason Associated Press poll to No. 9 in the final ranking. Brown also guided Duke to a 28-6 overall record, which was eight wins better than the previous season. She became just the fourth Blue Devil to collect 200 made field goals and over 100 assists in school history.
Along with Brown on the third team were Sydney Wiese (Oregon State), Lindsay Allen (Notre Dame), Shatori Walker-Kimbrough (Maryland) and Victoria Vivians (Mississippi State).
Brown earned WBCA All-Region, espnW All-America honorable mention, All-ACC first team, All-ACC Defensive team, All-ACC Tournament first team and received the Kay Yow Award as the ACC women's basketball scholar-athlete of the year. She was a Naismith top 30 selection, a finalist for the Nancy Lieberman Award, USBWA Ann Meyers Drysdale Watch List and Wade Watch midseason selection. Brown became the eighth Blue Devil to register 600 points in a season, which also ranked sixth on Duke's single-season charts.
One of the top defenders in the league, Brown ranked 23rd nationally with a 2.82 per game steals average, while also ranking third in free throw percentage (92.8) and 53rd in scoring (18.3). Her 96 steals on the year was the fifth-highest in Duke single-season history.
As a team, Duke advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round before falling to 10th-seeded Oregon.
