2017 Blue Devil Goal Tracker…
Need To Know…
Two Down, Four To Go…
The Blue Devils took the second step toward their ultimate goal of winning the program's first national championship on Friday, defeating Oklahoma State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Duke advanced to its 11th Sweet Sixteen in history and improved its overall NCAA Tournament record to 35-20-9. Robbie Church is now 28-13-8 in NCAA Tournament play and has advanced to the third round of play in 10 of his 15 NCAA Tournament showings.
No. 1 On The Dance Floor…
For just the second time in school history, the Blue Devils will enter the NCAA Tournament as one of the field's four No. 1 seeds. Duke's stellar season, which featured a program record 19-match winning streak and the third ACC regular season title in school history, propelled the squad to a top seed. The only other time this feat was accomplished was in 2011, when Duke made one of its three College Cup appearances in school history.
The selection marks the 23rd time in history that the Blue Devils have made the Big Dance and the 14th time in the last 15 seasons.
Duke Scores A TD, Tacks On The PAT…
It was a clinical performance from the Blue Devils on Friday night, as they set a school record for goals in an NCAA Tournament contest with seven in the shutout win against Oklahoma State. The seven were the most since defeating Wofford 9-1 on Aug. 19, 2016. A total of six different Blue Devils scored in the contest and six collected assists, as Duke set a season high with 24 points.
Paschall Breaks Through…
It had been a slow start for Karlie Paschall and her collegiate career. Then came Friday. The freshman scored the first two goals of her career in the 7-0 romping of Oklahoma State, becoming the fifth Blue Devil in school history to tally her first-career goal in NCAA Tournament play and the first since Mia Gyau did so last year against Charlotte.
Welcome Back, Quinn…
After missing the last three games while away with the Canadian National Team, redshirt senior Rebecca Quinn made a major splash in her first match back. The Toronto native netted one goal and recorded two assists, racking up a career-high four points in the win.
Dorsey Moving Up The Record Books…
With her goal and two assists on Friday, senior Imani Dorsey continued to make moves in the Duke record book. On the career side, she is remains fifth in shots (232) and tied for sixth in game-winning goals (10), while moving up into a tie for seventh in assists (21) and up to ninth in points (75). Her 27 goals give her sole possession of 10th on the charts.
She also made moves on the single-season side of things, moving into a tie for seventh in points (33) and shots (79). The senior is tied for 10th with 12 goals and four game winners.
Showing Out In The Classroom…
Duke women's soccer has a long tradition of excellence in the classroom and last Thursday, that tradition carried on. Imani Dorsey, Schuyler DeBree, EJ Proctor, Kayla McCoy and Chelsea Burns were tabbed CoSIDA Academic All-District III First Team, putting them on the ballot to be named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in December.
Early Goal Emphasis…
Heading into the Florida State contest, head coach Robbie Church put a heavy emphasis on scoring within the first 15 minutes of play and his squad responded. Prior to that game, Duke had just one score within the first 15 minutes, but since then Ella Stevens (2:37 vs. Florida State), Taylor Racioppi (3:35 at Boston College & 9:16 vs. Oklahoma State, NCAAT), Kayla McCoy (8:21 at Syracuse) and Chelsea Burns (13:01 vs. Boston College, ACCT) have netted early goals.
A majority of Duke's 53 goals have come midway through the first half and in the early portion of the second, as it has 11 from 15:01 – 30:00 and has tallied 10 in the 45:01 – 60:00 stretch. Duke has punched in 26 scores in the second half.
Set Em Up, Shut Em Down…
There have been a number of storylines to this year's Duke women's soccer squad, but one of the best has been the play of the Blue Devil defense. On the year, Duke has allowed just 10 goals, outscoring opponents 53-10, and has posted 15 total shutouts after blanking OSU. Over the last 10 matches, the Blue Devils have outscored foes 22-3 and shut out seven opponents, including picking up four ranked victories.
Duke leads the ACC with a .435 goals against average and a .652 shutout percentage, which stand ninth and 13th in the NCAA entering the weekend. The Blue Devils kept the performance going strong through ACC play, as they earned clean sheets against eight of their 10 conference opponents. That mark is the most in program history.
A big part of that success has been the play of the Blue Devil backline of Chelsea Burns, Schuyler DeBree, Taylor Mitchell and Morgan Reid. Burns, DeBree and Reid have started every match for Duke and earned all 15 clean sheets, while Mitchell has drawn the start in 20 contests. Reid and DeBree have gone the distance in 19 games this season, while Mitchell has played the full time in 13 and Burns has 12 such performances.
Goals On Goals On Goals…
The Blue Devils continue to dominate on the offensive side of the ball as well, tallying 17 multi-goal matches this season. Duke has scored 53 times, which leads the ACC and is 12th in the NCAA entering the weekend. Twelve Blue Devils have scored this year, showing the array of weapons coach Robbie Church has at his disposal, led by junior Kayla McCoy and senior Imani Dorsey, who both have 12 goals on the year.
Proctor Nearly Flawless Between The Posts…
It's been business as usual for EJ Proctor this season. The All-ACC First Team keeper has been solely responsible for 11 of Duke's 15 shutouts this year, putting her career total at 32, which is third in Duke history and one shy of taking over second place. On the year, Proctor leads the ACC in goals against average (0.40) and save percentage (.846). She is also second in the conference and sixth in the nation with her 11 clean sheets.
Dorsey Up For Senior CLASS Award…
Senior Imani Dorsey has been on a tear in her final season at Duke and she added to that by becoming one of 10 finalists for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award. Former Blue Devil standout Christina Gibbons captured the award last season, becoming the first in school history to do so. Dorsey is the fourth in DWS history to be named a finalist for the award and fans can vote for her daily until Nov. 20 by going to www.seniorclassaward.com/vote. Up Next…
The winner of Sunday's contest will advance to the quarterfinals of the 2017 NCAA Tournament and will face the winner of Baylor and Notre Dame. Date and time are TBA.
