DURHAM, N.C. – Former James Madison standout Morgan Heisman has joined the Blue Devil women's lacrosse program as a volunteer assistant coach, as announced by head coach Kerstin Kimel Tuesday.
“We are so pleased to welcome Morgan and her husband Evan to our Duke Lacrosse Family,” Kimel said. “I have had the good fortune of working with Morgan since she was an undergraduate as she has been a steady presence at our many Duke Lacrosse Camps over the years.
“Morgan was a stellar goalkeeper at James Madison and has an extensive college and high school coaching background. Most important, she has tremendous character and work ethic making her an awesome fit for our staff and our program. We could not be more excited to have someone of her caliber in our volunteer position.”
Formerly Morgan Kelly, Heisman was a third team All-America selection by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) in 2010. As the Dukes' starting goalkeeper, she was also named to the second team All-South Region team in her final season and was tabbed the Most Outstanding Player of the CAA Tournament after leading James Madison to the league title. Heisman's other accolades included garnering first team All-CAA recognition and being selected to the All-State (VaSID) first team.
Heisman recorded a .508 save percentage as a senior to rank fifth among all goalkeepers nationally. Her save percentage and 6.90 goals against average paced all CAA goalkeepers that year as well.
The Annapolis, Md., native also excelled in the classroom at James Madison, earning the CAA Commissioner's Academic Award on three occasions.
Prior to joining the Duke staff, Heisman spent one season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Dartmouth in 2013. That season saw the Big Green compile an 11-8 ledger and make an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Heisman also previously spent two seasons as an assistant coach at George Mason in 2011 and 2012. During her time with the Patriots, she helped coordinate team practices, several camps and clinics, team functions and travel arrangements. Her experience as a player also served her well as the director for the program's several offseason camps along with numerous other camps in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
Heisman graduated from James Madison in 2010 with a bachelor's degree in sport management. She also minored in business and human resource development.
"In my few years away from the sidelines I really missed working with student-athletes at the collegiate level,” Heisman said. “It is a privilege to be associated with such a prestigious institution. I am extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to assimilate into collegiate athletics again and work with the impressive and talented staff here at Duke. I look forward to a tremendous year and to building relationships within the Duke community."
