DURHAM, N.C. – Following a week off from competition after the fall's season-opening Duke James Bonk Invitational, the Duke men's tennis team is back in action at the Saint Francis ITA Men's All-American Championships. The event will take place in Tulsa, Okla., at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center for the 12th straight year.
Prequalifying matches begin on Saturday with qualifying matches starting on Monday, October 3, and main draw contests getting underway on Thursday, October 6. The singles and doubles finals are scheduled for Monday, October 10.
“This is a really cool event,” head coach Ramsey Smith said. “It's the biggest college tennis tournament in the world. We have players in each division of draws with prequalifying, qualifying and main draw. It's a great opportunity to be able to break through and advance, for all the guys on our team going.”
Duke will send senior TJ Pura and freshman Nick Stachowiak to the prequalifying round. Pura went 2-2 at the Bonk Invite to place fourth in the blue draw while Stachowiak finished the weekend 3-1 and earned fifth in the blue draw by defeating Maksim Kan of Wake Forest, who is ranked No. 88 in the preseason Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) ledger.
Sophomore Catalin Mateas and freshman Robert Levine lead the Blue Devils in the qualifying rounds. Mateas, ranked No. 100 in the preseason Oracle/ITA poll, posted a successful third place finish with a 3-1 showing in the white draw at the Bonk Invite while Levine went 1-2 during his first career weekend.
The Blue Devils have one participant already qualified for the main draw in junior Nicolas Alvarez. Alvarez, standing No. 15 in the Oracle/ITA rankings, helped his native country of Peru to a 3-2 victory against Venezuela in the championship match of the Davis Cup Group II tournament.
This weekend will be Alvarez's first fall match with Duke, and he could be joined by teammates if they advance out of the prequalifying and qualifying rounds.
In doubles, the tandem of Stachowiak and Levine will take part in the qualifying rounds.
“I think we've prepared very well,” Smith added. “I think the guys are ready. A lot depends on draws, especially in the prequalifying, where you could play one of the top guys in the country who just isn't ranked yet. We're looking for the guys to execute what we've been practicing and focusing on the program values and culture that we've been working on building.”
Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive an automatic entry into the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Nov. 3-6, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
Following action at the ITA All-American, Duke will host the ITA Regional Qualifier in Cary, N.C., at the Cary Tennis Park from October 14-18.
