REUNION, Fla. – In her first collegiate tournament since winning the 2016 NCAA Championship, Duke University sophomore
Virginia Elena Carta carded a two-under-par, 70, to lead the Blue Devils on day one of the Annika Intercollegiate at the Reunion Resort in Reunion, Fla.
Carta, who hails from Udine, Italy, registered two pars, before suffering a bogey on No. 12 to open her round Sunday. She went into red numbers, after notching her second eagle of her collegiate career on the 475-yard, par five 14th hole. Carta hit driver, then three-wood to within seven feet and drained the eagle putt to get to one-under-par. She went to two-under with a six-foot birdie on the 17th.
Following eight straight pars, Carta rolled in her second birdie of the day to get to three-under, but closed with a three-putt bogey to finish with a 70. She hit 15 greens, 11 fairways and had 34 putts in round one. Carta is tied 14th overall on the 6,257-yard, par 72 Watson Course.
Both
Leona Maguire and
Gurbani Singh each carded two-over-par rounds of 74 and are tied for 46th overall. Maguire, the No. 1 ranked amateur golfer in the world from Cavan, Ireland, was held without a birdie and suffered only two bogeys and 16 pars. Her bogies came on holes No. 5 and No. 7. Maguire finished with 15 greens, 34 putts and 12 fairways hit on the day.
A product of New Delhi, India, Singh had a team-best 30 putts, 11 greens hit in regulation and 11 fairways on day one. She held a one-under ledger through 13 holes with birdies on No. 13 and No. 2, but played her final five holes at three-over-par to finish with a 74.
Duke's lone senior,
Sandy Choi, had a solid start to the day with a one-under-par score through seven holes, but suffered a bogey, double-bogey and bogey on her eighth, ninth and 10th holes to drop to three-over-par. Choi, who is from Seoul, South Korea, registered pars over her final eight holes to finish with a 75. She hit 15 greens, 12 fairways and had 35 putts Sunday.
Junior
Lisa Maguire turned in a six-over-par, 78, as she was three-over-par on both the front and back nine.
As a team, Duke is off to a slow start in 12th overall with a five-over-par, 293. South Carolina (274), Georgia (278), Southern California (279), UCLA (279), Florida (282), Arizona State (283) and Arkansas (283) rounded out the top seven teams.
The Blue Devils made the turn at even par, but were five-over-par on the back nine and was held to only two birdies over the final nine holes.
South Carolina's Katelyn Dambaugh opened with an eight-under-par, 64, and holds a two stroke lead, individually.
Duke will open the second round Monday with an 8:50 a.m., along with Arizona and Duke.
