TOLEDO, Ohio – Junior Jake Shuman made a final-round run to a share of the individual medal on Tuesday at the Inverness Intercollegiate, pacing a Duke men's golf team that earned a runner-up finish at the tournament.
The Blue Devils shot 288 (+4) as a team on Tuesday to finish three strokes behind Auburn with a total of 846 (-6).
Shuman turned in a sparkling final-round 68 (-3) on Tuesday, highlighted by an ace on the par-three 12th hole. The Needham, Mass., native also poured in four birdies on the way to his first collegiate medal.
“I was able to be really consistent today, and really for the entire tournament,” Shuman said. “I tried not to get too high or too low. The hole-in-one definitely helped the scorecard and I was able to limit mistakes with only three bogeys. I'm really comfortable on this golf course and my plan was to keep the ball in play and rely on my ball striking. I knew the history of this tournament and I knew that if I was under par, I was going to have a good shot to win.”
Shuman shared medalist honors with Michigan's Nick Carlson, as both players finished the tournament at four-under with totals of 209. Shuman fell to Carlson in a one-hole playoff.
“This gives me some momentum and confidence, but at the same time, I want to keep striving to do better,” Shuman said. “We have a nice week-and-a-half break between tournaments and there's time to get back to work. I want to get the win next time out in Texas.”
Sophomore Alex Smalley fired a final-round 71 (-1), using a pair of birdies down the homestretch, to move into a tie for fourth place for the tournament. The Wake Forest, N.C., native posted a three-round total of 211 (-2) after putting up a red number in the two closing rounds.
Senior Matt Oshrine finished in a tie for 13th place with a total of 214 (+1), while senior Max Greyserman tied for 20th with a total of 216 (+3) and junior Adam Wood tied for 26th with a total of 218 (+5).
Duke's contingent at the Queens Invitational at The Club at Irish Creek took third in the 36-hole event with a total of 600 (+32).
Senior Alexander Matlari shared medalist honors after shooting a final-round 73 (+2) to post a total of 144 (+2). He dropped a one-hole playoff after the conclusion of the final round. Senior Andrew Bieber tied for seventh with a total of 147 (+5), sophomore Shrish Dwivedi tied for 10th with a total of 148 (+6) and freshman Steven DiLisio tied for 47th with a total of 161 (+19).
Duke will be idle until Oct. 2, when it opens play at the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
