CARY, N.C. – Freshman Meible Chi highlighted the last day of the Duke Bonk Invitational, held at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C., after winning the final of the Black singles draw to register an unblemished singles mark over the weekend.
“Meible played well,” head women's tennis coach Jamie Ashworth said. “She managed her game well. She did a good job of controlling her emotions. It was good to be able to see her on the court and talk to her so we can learn her mindset when she's playing. It was good to learn more about her.”
Chi, a product of Weston, Fla., defeated Florida's Peggy Porter, 7-6 (4), 6-2, to earn her third singles win of the weekend and claim the Black singles draw title. Chi did not drop a set throughout her three singles competitions, and owns a perfect 3-0 record this fall.
Similar to Chi, senior Alyssa Smith wrapped up play on a high note, as she defeated North Carolina's Maggie Kane, 7-5, 6-2, to win the third place consolation match of the Gold draw. With the victory, Smith's singles record moved to 1-2 on the season.
Senior Chalena Scholl reached the final of the White singles draw, but ultimately fell to North Carolina's Sara Daavettila, 6-3, 6-2. Scholl posted a strong weekend of play in singles action however, concluding the event with a 2-1 record.
Redshirt sophomore Christina Makarova was unable to claim the victory in her third place consolation match of the Yellow singles draw, as the San Diego, Calif., native fell to North Carolina's Rachel James-Baker, 6-2, 6-2.
A select number of Blue Devils return to action Saturday, Oct. 1, to compete in the Riviera All-American in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
