WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Strong doubles play from the Blue Devils highlighted day one of the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., as Duke's duo posted a 2-0 mark to open the competition Friday morning.
Senior Alyssa Smith and redshirt sophomore Christina Makarova, competing alongside one another as a doubles team for the first time since November 2014, did not drop a match over the first two rounds of the three-day event. The Duke pair outlasted Davidson's Anna Catharine Feaster and Ally Sexton, 8-7 (5), to start the day, before Smith and Makarova returned to the courts and defeated Richmond's Brittany Boys and Lea Owens, 8-3. With the victory over the Richmond doubles team, Smith and Makarova advanced to the final of the A Doubles draw, which is scheduled for Saturday at 9 a.m.
Smith returned to action later in the day, facing Erica Braschi of Elon in singles competition. The Laguna Niguel, Calif., native dropped her first round singles contest in the A Singles draw, 7-5, 6-2. Smith, who owns a 1-3 singles record this season, will return to action tomorrow at 11:30 a.m.
