
Duke Caps Opening Weekend with Three Victories

CARY, N.C. – The Duke men's tennis team finished its opening weekend of Bonk Invitational play with only singles competition, recording three victories.
Highlighting the day for the Blue Devils was sophomore Catalin Mateas posting a 6-1, 7-6 (4) triumph against Florida's Joshua Wardell to claim third place in the white draw. Mateas is ranked No. 100 in the preseason Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll.
Also in the white draw, classmate Vincent Lin took home the consolation third place title with a hard-fought 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (6) victory versus Georgiy Malshev of N.C. State. Sophomore Jason Lapidus capped the white draw with a 7-5, 6-3 setback to Florida's David Sarkissov.
In the blue draw, freshman Nick Stachowiak picked up a Sunday win with a 6-4, 7-5 decision against Maksim Kan of Wake Forest, who is ranked No. 88 in the preseason Oracle/ITA ledger. Senior TJ Pura suffered a 6-0, 6-1 setback to Brandon Laubster of Auburn to finish fourth.
Junior Andrew DeJoy concluded his participation in the Duke James Bonk Invitational with a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Florida's Stephen Madonia in the black draw.
The Blue Devils return to action in two weeks at the ITA All-American qualifying in Tulsa, Okla., from October 1-9.
