CARY, N.C. – Senior Chalena Scholl reached the final of the White singles draw while freshman Meible Chi secured a spot in the Black singles draw to highlight day two of the Duke Bonk Invitational in Cary, N.C. The final round of singles is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Sunday.
Chi continued her strong singles play Saturday afternoon, advancing to the finals of her draw after defeating North Carolina's Chloe Ouellet-Pizer, 6-2, 6-0. Chi, who has not dropped a set through two days of competition, will face Florida's Peggy Porter Sunday morning.
After competing in doubles earlier in the day, Scholl returned to the courts for singles play in the afternoon and dropped her opponent, Spencer Liang of Florida, 6-4, 6-2, to reach the finals of the White singles draw. Scholl is slated to face North Carolina's Sara Daavettila, who reached the final after upending NC State's Adriana Reami, 7-6 (4), 6-4.
Chi began her day of competition playing alongside sophomore Ellyse Hamlin in doubles action. The Duke duo dropped its match against Virginia's Cassie Mercer and Chloe Gullickson, 8-1, in the consolation finals of the Blue doubles draw. With the result, Chi and Hamlin posted a doubles mark of 1-2 for the two days of competition.
Similar to Chi and Hamlin, the Duke tandem of redshirt sophomore Christina Makarova and junior Rebecca Smaller also reached the consolation finals of their respective draw. The pair was unable to earn the victory over its opponent, Cassandra Vazquez and Maggie Kane of North Carolina, falling, 8-1. Makarova and Smaller concluded doubles action with a 1-2 record.
Seniors Alyssa Smith and Scholl suffered their first doubles loss of the event, falling in the final of the White doubles draw to Florida's Anna Danilina and Liang, 8-7 (1). With the defeat, Smith and Scholl's record dropped to 2-1 over the weekend.
In consolation semifinals action of the Yellow singles draw, Makarova suffered a 6-2, 6-2 setback to VCU's Anna Rasmussen. Makarova will wrap up the weekend's competition in a third place consolation match with North Carolina's Rachael James-Baker.
Smith also fell in her consolation semifinal match after LSU's Ryann Foster posted the 6-1, 7-6 (1) result. Smith will conclude play at the Duke Bonk Invitational with a consolation third place match against North Carolina's Maggie Kane.
