DURHAM, N.C. – Duke picked up its fourth straight-set victory of the 2016 season, sweeping Campbell 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-18) Friday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Freshman Jamie Stivers and senior Jordan Tucker paced the offense with 15 and 11 kills, respectively. Both Blue Devils posted hitting percentages above .400, helping Duke (5-4) hit .321 as a team for the evening. The Blue Devils totaled 45 kills over the three sets and committed just nine attack errors on 11 attempts.
“Jamie [Stivers]as a freshman was really able to be effective as a hitter, playing six rotations and maintaining the focus she needs to be efficient,” said head coach Jolene Nagel. “Jordan [Tucker] is one of our captains. She needs to be able to do some things out there for us and she did that for us tonight.”
Campbell (4-8) was not as effective offensively as the Camels registered a .074 hitting percentage. Loni Kreun was the only Camel to surpass double-digit kills, knocking down 10.
Duke opened the match with a 10-4 first set lead and never let Campbell closer than four points the rest of the way. Tucker totaled six kills to pace the offense while libero Sasha Karelov picked up 14 of her match-high 21 digs in the frame.
The Blue Devils once again mounted a 10-4 advantage to start the second set. The lead ballooned to 10 points before Duke closed out the stanza on a 6-1 run. Tucker and Stivers had four kills each while Duke hit .423 as a team.
The Blue Devils shook off a slow third-set start to rebound for the 25-18 decision. Down 4-1, Duke mounted a 10-4 rally to effectively erase the early deficit. The two teams traded points for a stretch before Duke pulled away with a 7-1 spurt. Stivers' 15th tally ultimately sealed the sweep.
“We had a great week of practice after that long trip out West,” Nagel added. “They were ready to get back to work. We focused on a few different areas. Being competitive out there and trying to serve tough. We always continue to work on our blocking and communication. The team really controlled the ball. Really excited we were able to get this one tonight. Hopefully we get some rest and get ready for a strong team tomorrow.”
Setter Cindy Marina notched her fourth double-double of the season, distributing 30 assists and gathering 11 digs in the winning effort. Marina was also one of three Blue Devils with three or more blocks, joined by sophomore Leah Meyer (6) and freshman Samantha Amos (3).
“That defensive unit back there was doing a great job,” said Nagel. “We were making the plays we needed to make. That really helped our offense be able to run.”
Duke returns to its home court Saturday, Sept. 17 to face the UNCW Seahawks at 4 p.m., on the ACC Network Extra.
