CARY, N.C. – Members of the Duke women's tennis team opened fall play Friday morning, competing in day one of the three-day Duke Bonk Invitational at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. The first day of action was highlighted by the stellar play of senior Chalena Scholl, who remained undefeated in both doubles and singles.
Senior Alyssa Smith and Scholl paired with one another and posted a perfect 2-0 mark to reach the finals of the White doubles draw. The duo defeated Furman's Ansley Speaks and Katarina Weymouth, 8-6, before carrying over its momentum into a match against Virginia's Chloe Gullickson and Rosie Johanson that ended in an 8-5 Duke victory. The Blue Devils are slated to face Florida's Anna Danilina and Spencer Liang Saturday in the final.
The Blue Devil tandem of junior Rebecca Smaller and redshirt sophomore Christina Makarova opened play Friday by falling to North Carolina's Jessie Aney and Alexa Graham, 8-1, but rebounded with a convincing 8-3 win over Virginia's Erica Susi and Teodora Radosavljevic. The Duke duo will face off against North Carolina's Cassandra Vazquez and Maggie Kane Saturday morning in the consolation final of the Black draw.
Sophomore Ellyse Hamlin and freshman Meible Chi, the 39th-ranked doubles pair in the preseason poll, registered a 1-1 mark in doubles action. Hamlin and Chi fell to LSU's Becca Weissmann and Skylar Holloway, 8-4, before returning to the courts to defeat North Carolina's Rachael James-Baker and Chloe Ouellet-Pizer, 8-6. With the win, Hamlin and Chi earned a spot in the consolation final, where they will face Virginia's Cassie Mercer and Meghan Kelley Saturday.
Scholl's strong play continued into the afternoon, as the Pompano Beach, Fla., native defeated her singles opponent, Abby Owens of LSU, 6-3, 6-4, to reach the semifinals of the White draw. Scholl is scheduled to take on Florida's Liang Saturday.
In addition to Scholl, Chi, competing in her first collegiate singles match, recorded an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win over Furman's Weymouth. Chi is slated to compete against Ouellet-Pizer in a Black draw semifinal match.
Makarova, Smaller and Smith each took the courts for singles play, as well. Makarova fell in her quarterfinal match to Virginia's Hunter Bleser, 6-4, 6-1, while Smaller suffered a 6-1, 6-4 setback to Weissmann. Smith was also unable to earn the victory in her match against TCU's Marie Norris, as the Laguna Niguel, Calif., native dropped her contest, 6-4, 6-3.
