NEWTON, Mass.—A long range goal in the 51st minute proved to be enough for No. 25 Boston College as the Eagles handed Duke a 1-0 setback to open ACC men's soccer action. The loss was the first for the Blue Devils this season.
Duke (2-1-1, 0-1-0) created the first quality chance in the game as Brian White's header went off the crossbar after Eagle goalie Cedric Saladin tipped it. Suniel Veerakone provided the pass for the junior striker after a fantastic service from Brandon Williamson on the right flank.
After a fast start to the game featuring a couple good looks from both teams, the Blue Devils and Eagles both settled into their respective rhythms. Play remained even of the next 10 minutes before Boston College (4-1-0, 1-0-0) started to take control.
Duke did well to weather the storm and responded with quality play in the closing minutes of the opening half. Saladin made consecutive saves in the 30th minute to keep the Blue Devils off the board and Duke's Robert Moewes answered with his second of the half to keep the game scoreless after 45 minutes.
The Eagles led 5-4 in shots in the opening half, with three of Duke's shots coming on frame.
Boston College struck quickly in the second half, taking a shot from distance. The half chance from Simon Enstrom deflected off of a Duke defender and spun into the corner of the Blue Devil goal for a 1-0 Eagle lead.
Duke responded well in search of the equalizer, but Ryan Thompson's free kick went just wide.
The Eagles, up 1-0 after 60 minutes, used the momentum of the early score and nearly made it 2-0 as a dangerous play was played through. Boston College also hit the post late in the second half to keep Duke within striking distance.
The Blue Devils regained their composure down the stretch and junior Cameron Moseley had a great look at the goal saved by Saladin. Nothing came of the resulting corner kick and time ticked down to zero for the 1-0 loss.
Boston College had the slight edge in shots, 12-10, while Duke had five shots on frame to the Eagles' four.
Moewes finished with three saves and Saladin had five in the shutout. It marked the first time this season Duke has been shut out.
The Blue Devils return home to host No. 21 Wake Forest Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. The game is the first of a four-game homestand for the Blue Devils and the final in a three-game stretch against top 25 programs.
