DURHAM, N.C. – Duke incoming freshman Colby Agu completed his final tournament with the United States Under 19 National Team Monday afternoon at the 33rd International U-20 Men's COTIF Tournament in Valencia, Spain. Agu and the United States failed to advance out of the group, despite posting wins over Mauritania and Spain.
A member of the U-19 squad that brought home the Slovakia Cup in April, Agu started the first game of the tournament against Venezuela. The Cary, N.C., native played 56 minutes in the 2-0 loss.
The U.S. bounced back with a 1-0 win over Mauritania with Agu coming off the bench in the 62 minutes to help the U-19s remain alive in the group. They followed that with a 1-0 triumph over Spain on a Brandon Vazquez goal in the 51st minute. Agu came into the game in the 80th minute.
Looking for a bid to the semifinals, the United States came up short in the final game of group play with a 3-1 loss to Bahrain.
Agu, a striker for the CASL Railhawks, helped lead the team to the top spot in the Southeast Division of the US Development Academy. He posted 13 goals in the 26 games he played for the Railhawks.
One of nine freshmen to join the Blue Devils in 2016, Agu and the Blue Devils will officially begin preseason training Aug. 10. Duke will host a pair of exhibition games Aug. 16 and Aug. 19 before kicking off the season Aug. 26 with the John Rennie Nike Invitational.
