RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — As high winds came into play Friday during the third round of Olympic golf action at the Reserva de Marapendi in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the scores suffered for most golfers. Duke University duo of
Leona Maguire and Laetitia Beck enter the final round in the top 35 overall.
Maguire, who is representing Ireland, featured a solid start to her round with front nine birdies on the second and fifth holes to get to five-under-par for the tournament. That placed the Duke junior in the top 10 overall.
But high winds on the back nine put a halt to the under-par scores as Maguire suffered six bogeys over a span of eight holes to finish with a 74. Maguire has now totaled rounds of 74, 65 and 74 for an even-par, 213. She heads into the final round tied for 24th.
Over the three days, Beck has collected rounds of 75, 70 and 71 for a three-over-par, 216, which is tied for 34th. The 2014 Duke alumna started her day with a birdie on the par five first hole, but then suffered a double-bogey on No. 3. With back-to-back birdies on No. 8 and No. 9, Beck made the turn at one-under-par, 34. She rolled in a 12-foot birdie putt on No. 10 to get to two-under-par on the day.
As winds started kicking up late in the round, Beck added bogeys on No. 14 and No. 18 to finish at even par.
Inbee Park leads the action with an 11-under-par, 202, while Lydia Ko and Gerina Piller are tied second with a nine-under, 204.
Saturday's final round will be aired live on The Golf Channel.
