DURHAM, N.C.— Following setting a 54-hole NCAA Championship record with a 13-under-par, 203, in Eugene, Ore., last week, Duke University freshman Virginia Elena Carta was presented with an opportunity to interview one of the all-time best NCAA Division I golfers and Blue Devil alumna Amanda Blumenherst, prior to the final round of the championship.
Carta, who hails from Udine, Italy, was able to get advice from Blumenherst, who had won the 2008 U.S. Women's Amateur at the Eugene Country Club and was joining the Golf Channel broadcast team for the first time. The Duke rookie held a six-stroke lead heading into the final day of action. Carta also asked Blumenherst about her new career opportunity with Golf Channel as well.
After holding on and producing an NCAA-record 16-under-par, 272, Carta became just the fourth Blue Devil to win the NCAA Championship -- Candy Hannemann (2001), Nirapathpongporn (2002) and Anna Grzebien (2005). Carta also set NCAA records for largest margin of victory (eight strokes) and 72-hole ledger of 272.
Don't miss the attached video of Carta interviewing Blumenherst with special thanks to the Golf Channel.
