DURHAM, N.C. --The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released the names of its regional award winners for the 2016 season, honoring Duke senior Beatrice Capra as the Carolina Region Senior Player of the Year. Monday's announcement marks Capra's second ITA regional honor of her college career, after the Ellicott City, Md., native garnered ITA Carolina Region Rookie of the Year accolades during her freshman campaign.
Capra recorded a well-rounded senior season in Durham, posting a 9-6 mark in singles action and a 17-12 ledger in doubles play. Earlier in the season, Capra earned ACC Player of the Week honors after helping the Blue Devils qualify for the 2016 ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships with a win over then 29th-ranked Mississippi State. Throughout the year, Capra registered four singles wins over nationally ranked opponents, including a 6-4, 6-3 win against then 13th-ranked Jasmine Lee of Mississippi State. Capra regularly ranked among the top 40 singles players in the country, reaching as high as No. 24 and currently sitting at No. 37.
In doubles, Capra paired primarily with freshman Ellyse Hamlin to register an overall record of 16-9, with four wins coming against top-75 teams. Capra and Hamlin served as Duke's top duo, competing on court one in 13 matches, the most of any Blue Devil tandem this season. The Duke duo ranked among the top 40 on the ITA doubles charts, reaching as high as No. 13 on the list. In the latest ranking, Capra and Hamlin appeared at No. 17.
Capra earned an at-large bid in this year's NCAA Singles Championship, as well as an at-large spot in the NCAA Doubles Championship, which begins May 25.
