BATON ROUGE, La. – The top-seeded and fourth-ranked Duke women's golf team got off to a slow start Thursday at the Baton Rouge Regional as the Blue Devils turned in a 10-over-par, 298, and sits tied seventh overall with 36 holes remaining at the 6,285-yard, par 72 University Club in Baton Rouge, La.
Washington turned in a two-under-par late in the day to take the day one team lead with a 286, while South Carolina (290), Oregon (292), Florida (293), Houston (295), Arizona State (296), Duke (298), Brigham Young (298), LSU (299) and East Carolina (301) rounded out the top 10 teams.
“Today we had wind on a really good golf course,” said Duke head coach
Dan Brooks. “Regionals is a little bit different animal. People tend to come out real hot at this tournament so we need to make sure we stay patient and keep believing in ourselves. If we do, we should be alright.”
Following the completion of 54 holes, the top six teams will advance to the NCAA Championship in Eugene, Ore., May 20-25.
“It [the wind] is definitely a factor,” said Brooks. “As far as I could tell we were handling the wind pretty well. The key at regionals is just don't take crazy chances, just play good, solid golf. Pick conservative targets and play aggressively. We did that pretty well.”
Duke junior
Sandy Choi along with sophomore
Leona Maguire set the pace for the Blue Devils in round one carding a one-over-par, 73, and both are tied 15th overall.
Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, opened the day with Duke's first birdie on the 496-yard, par five third hole to get to one-under. She remained in red numbers until Maguire suffered a double-bogey on the next par five, No. 6. Maguire got back to even par with a birdie on No. 11, but closed with bogeys on No. 14 and No. 17, along with a birdie on No. 16 to finish with a 73. She rolled in a team-best 28 putts to go along with 10 fairways and 10 greens.
After opening with three straight pars, Choi suffered back-to-back bogeys on No. 4 and No. 5, which was started by a three-putt bogey on the 341-yard, par four fourth. A product of Seoul, South Korea, Choi netted her first birdie of the day on the par three eighth and made the turn at one-over, 37. Choi kicked off the back nine with a bogey on No. 10, but came back to notch a birdie on No. 11 to return to one-over-par. She finished the afternoon with seven consecutive pars to close with a 73. She hit a team-high 16 greens, 13 fairways and had 34 putts on the day.
Nine total players shot under par in the first round led by Houston's Leonie Harm and Washington's Ying Luo with a three-under-par, 69.
After missing the ACC Championship, sophomore
Gurbani Singh returned to the lineup for regionals and carded a four-over, 76, which is tied 42nd overall. After opening with bogeys on two out of the first three holes, Singh settled down to play the next six holes one-under-par. She hit her six-iron from 160 yards on No. 8 to within two feet for the birdie to get back to one-over. Singh, who is from New Delhi, India, suffered back-to-back bogeys to start the back nine as she fell back to three-over-par. Standing about 28 feet from the cup on the 163-yard, par three 13th, Singh rolled in her second birdie of the day to get to two-over. She closed the afternoon with bogeys on 16 and 18 to finish with a 76. She hit 10 fairways, nine greens and had 31 putts in her first round.
Seeing action in her first NCAA Regional, freshman
Virginia Elena Carta was one-over-par during her first seven holes as she had a bogey on No. 4. Prior to making the turn, Carta had a bogey on No. 8 and a double-bogey on No. 9 to make the turn at four-over, 40. She played the back nine at even par with two birdies, two bogeys and five pars. Carta, a product of Udine, Italy, birdied both par fives on the back nine with under four foot putts. She hit 13 greens, 12 fairways and had 34 putts Thursday as she carded a 76 and is tied 42nd.
Heading back to the University Club after winning the individual title at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic in March, senior
Celine Boutier struggled out of the gate with her tee shot and made the turn at five-over, 41. On the back nine, she had four bogeys, but holed out on the 331-yard, par four 15th for eagle to get two strokes back. Boutier, who is from Montrouge, France, was 75 yards away and hit her 50-degree wedge that bounced once and went in the cup. She finished with a 79 and is tied 68th overall.
“I watched Celine play quite a bit today,” said Brooks. “She didn't have the best day, but she showed impressive mental toughness.”
As a team, Duke carded only nine birdies Thursday in the first round. The Blue Devils played hole No. 4 at four-over-par, but registered three birdies on the par five 11th.
“We always play to win,” commented Brooks. “That is what we are thinking about. I think we are 12 or 13 shots back, something like that. That is very doable in a team event like this.”
Duke will open the second round beginning at 7:30 a.m., off hole 1 along with BYU and LSU.
