NEW LONDON, N.C. – Duke sophomore Jake Shuman saved the best round of a stellar ACC Championship performance for last, shooting 67 (-5) on Sunday to finish in a tie for second at the Old North State Club. The No. 20 Duke men's golf team shot 289 (+1) as a team on Sunday and finished in fifth place.
The Blue Devils finished the tournament with a total of 865 (+1). Clemson claimed the conference title with a score of 839 (-25).
Shuman was nearly flawless on Sunday, rolling in six birdies and recording just one bogey. He caught fire on the back nine, birdying the first four holes after the turn and closing the tournament with a birdie on No. 18. His total of 207 (-9) was his best 54-hole score of the year and was just one shot in back of tournament champion Robin Sciot-Siegrist of Louisville.
“We couldn't be happier for or more proud of Jake,” Duke head coach Jamie Green said. “Sometimes, when you put yourself in a position to win, the hardest part can be backing it up in the final round. Today's performance says a lot about his ability, but also his toughness mentally, physically and emotionally. He was in complete control of his game this week. He knocked on the door repeatedly today. You can't play defense out here, and I want to congratulate Robin, but Jake also played extremely well today.”
Shuman was under par in all three rounds at the ACC Championship, including two rounds in the 60s. He will head into NCAA play in the midst of a streak of three consecutive top-three individual finishes.
“With this being my second time here, I knew what to expect from the golf course and what it took to win here last year,” Shuman said. “The golf course played a little tougher this year but I had a game plan as to how I wanted to attack the course and I stuck to it. I hit the ball pretty well, but I think the biggest difference for me over the last few weeks has been making a few more putts.
“We also know what to expect in the postseason after being in regionals and NCAAs last year, and this is big for me from a confidence standpoint. Every shot matters in NCAA play and it's good to have the confidence after playing well three weeks in a row.”
Freshman Alex Smalley posted a one-over 73 on Sunday to finish the tournament in a tie for 23rd with a total of 217 (+1). Sophomore Adam Wood finished in a tie for 31st with a total of 220 (+4) after shooting 74 (+2) on Sunday, while junior Matt Oshrine shot 75 (+3) in the final round and finished in a tie for 36th with a total of 221 (+5).
Junior Max Greyserman rounded out the Duke lineup in a tie for 46th with a total of 227 (+11).
“We wanted to play our best golf and walk out of here with a championship, but we definitely had some bright spots this week,” Green said. “There are some things we can sharpen, and we have some time to do that. Coach Luten and I have the utmost belief in these guys and we're excited for NCAA play. You have to be mentally tough to advance at this point in the season, and we'll prepare ourselves accordingly.”
Duke will now await the NCAA regional round selections to learn its destination for the start of postseason play.
