GREENSBORO, N.C. – Duke University sophomore
Leona Maguire and freshman
Virginia Elena Carta turned in top 10 finishes at the 2016 ACC Championship Sunday as the Blue Devils placed third overall as a team at the 6,089-yard, par 72 Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
For the second straight year, Virginia cruised to the ACC Championship with a 54-hole ledger of nine-under-par, 855, to win by 11 strokes over Wake Forest (866). The Blue Devils carded rounds of 294, 296 and 293 on its way to finishing third with an 883.
“We don't have any reason to hang our heads,” said Duke head coach
Dan Brooks. “We played a tough golf course and if everybody on your team is just a little bit off and the other team everybody's really hot it can look like a big gap. It is a big gap and hats off to Virginia. They had a great tournament. Second time in a row they've come in here and done this. They beat us big last year and we made it all the way to the semifinals at nationals, and that's what I told my team is that we're not in late May yet, we don't need to be great right now. We were off, but not that far off and we've got time.”
North Carolina (884), NC State (886), Clemson (894), Louisville (898), Miami (899), Florida State (901), Notre Dame (904), Boston College (923) and Virginia Tech (952) rounded out the field for the three days.
Lauren Coughlin of Virginia birdied the final hole to clinch the individual ledger with a nine-under-par, 207, while Wake Forest's Sierra Sims (209) and Jennifer Kupcho (209) were tied second. Only four golfers finished the weekend at under-par with Lauren Diaz-Yi of Virginia as the other with a 214.
Seeing action in her first ACC Championship, Carta turned in rounds of 74, 73 and 72 over the three days at Sedgefield. She opened with a bogey on No. 3, but registered her first of four birdies on the day on the 483-yard, par five fifth as she was on the green in two. Carta, who hails from Udine, Italy, went on to have three bogeys over her next four holes to make the turn at three-over, 38.
The highest ranked freshman golfer in the ACC, Carta opened the back nine with four consecutive pars, before getting hot at the end. She rolled in a 40-foot putt for birdie on the 402-yard, par four 14th and then drained a four-foot putt on No. 15 to move to one-over-par for the day. After hitting her approach into the greenside bunker on the par five 18, Carta drained a right-to-left putt for birdie to close with an even-par, 72. She hit a team-high 16 greens, seven fairways and rolled 35 putts in the final round.
“Well, the second nine today was much better because I was more focused, but all the other days I had some problems on the second nine,” said Carta. “So, I changed a little bit the strategy and I was more calm. Jon [Whithaus] helped me through the 10th, 11th and 12th and helped me a lot, so I guess that was the key.”
The top-10 finish for Carta marked the third straight outing she has finished in the top 10 and she now owns four top 10 placements on the year.
Brooks on Carta's play over the three days, “I just told her, just a minute ago, to be a freshman coming in on this golf course, the greens are rolling fast, it's a tour-level course, to shoot what she did is really good.”
A product of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire continued to struggle on the opening nine holes as she made the turn Sunday at three-over, 38. She notched a bogey on the opening hole and double-bogey on No. 5, before closing the nine with four consecutive pars. Maguire, the 2015 ACC Individual Champion, registered her first birdie of the day on the par five 10th and got back to even par as she chipped in for eagle on the 445-yard, par five 15th. It was the only eagle on No. 15 on the day. She got into trouble in the greenside bunker on No. 18 and went on to close with a double-bogey. For the day, Maguire finished with a two-over, 74.
“Her game was off,” commented Brooks on Maguire. “She wasn't at her best and, you know, Leona has, she has the ability to get an eagle on 15 the last day even though she's not hitting it great. That's who she is. She's going to make something out of it every time. When we see her off, it ends up being two or three shots maybe because she scrambles and makes it happen no matter what the game is giving her that day.”
Junior
Sandy Choi carded her sixth top 20 finish on the season as she collected three straight rounds of 74 over the weekend. Choi, who is from Seoul, South Korea, was tied 17th with a 222. She now owns two top 20 placements in three appearances in the ACC Championship. Choi was limited to only one birdie for the second consecutive round. It came on the 152-yard, par three 12th as she birdied the hole all three days.
With her 2.83 scoring average on par three holes, Choi ranked tied second overall. She hit 14 fairways, 12 greens and had 32 putts in the final round.
The 2014 ACC Individual Champion, senior
Celine Boutier rebounded nicely with a one-over, 73, in the final round. Boutier, a product of Montrouge, France, finished 40th overall with a 229. The two-time All-America was 13-over-par during the 54-holes, but 11 of those strokes came on the 363-yard, par four 13th. Boutier was only two-over-par in the other 52 holes on the weekend, which included 10 birdies.
In Sunday's final round, Boutier registered birdies on No. 1, No. 5 and No. 8 to get to three-under-par. She had a double-double on No. 9, but came back to roll in a birdie on No. 12, prior to heading to No. 13. Boutier went on to suffer a double-bogey and had a three-putt bogey on No. 15 to finish with a 73. She hit seven fairways, 14 greens and had 31 putts to close her final ACC Championship.
“She's so tough,” said Brooks. “She's been struggling with some things and yet she won at LSU, I think she had a course record there on the redesigned course and I think it was a tournament record maybe. That kind of golf in the midst of having some troubles and kind of losing a little confidence at times, and she is the kind of player that's going to bounce back. Toughness is what it comes down to this time of year, and so I'm pretty happy with the toughness of this group. I saw it right here at this tournament.”
After playing solid over the first two days with rounds of 76 and 74, sophomore
Lisa Maguire had a rough day turning in a 12-over, 84. A native of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire tied 48th with 234. She closed strong with birdies on No. 14 and No. 16 to play her final five holes at one-under-par. Maguire's 10 birdies over the three days of play ranked tied sixth for the weekend.
Duke will next await the NCAA Regional Selection show Monday, April 25 at 6:00 p.m.
