DURHAM, N.C. – Former Duke University standout and current United States women's national team member Sarah Bullard was among the 40 players selected in Wednesday's inaugural United Women's Lacrosse League (UWLX) draft. A 2011 graduate of Duke, Bullard was selected as the fourth pick in the third round by the Boston Storm.
The UWLX is the world's first semi-professional women's lacrosse league, featuring teams in Baltimore, Boston, Long Island and Philadelphia this year. The 2016 schedule begins May 28 during the NCAA Championship weekend in Pennsylvania, and will run for 10 weeks during the summer leading up to a championship weekend July 30.
Following Wednesday evening's live draft, each team will round out its 20-member roster May 1 at an all-team combine. A separate draft for current college seniors will also be held at the conclusion of the NCAA season.
A member of the 2009 and 2013 U.S. World Cup Championship squads and the 2015-16 national team, Bullard was a two-time Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-America selection as a midfielder for the Blue Devils. She was twice named a Tewaaraton Trophy nominee in addition to netting All-ACC and All-ACC Tournament team recognition. Bullard continues to rank among the program's leaders in career goals, points, draw controls, caused turnovers and assists.
Wednesday evening's live show on Lax Sports Network also saw current Duke sophomore Kyra Harney collect Division I National Player of the Week honors from the IWLCA. Harney headlined the Blue Devil attack in Saturday's 12-8 victory over No. 11 Boston College with four goals and an assist. She earned her team-leading eighth hat trick of the season and continues to pace Duke in points, goals and game-winning goals for the year.
Harney and the 13th-ranked Blue Devils travel to No. 7 Notre Dame Saturday for a 12 p.m. matchup on WatchND.tv.
