Choi Continues to Pace Blue Devils Through Two Days

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – For the second straight day, Duke's Sandy Choi continued to pace the second-ranked Blue Devils at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate as the junior sits only two shots off the lead with 18 holes remaining at the 6,208-yard, par 71 Pete Dye Course at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
Choi, who hails from Seoul, South Korea, has turned in rounds of 71 and 70 for a 36-hole ledger of 141 and trails Virginia's Lauren Coughlin and Vanderbilt's Alexandra Farnsworth with a three-under-par, 141.
Duke kicked off its day on the back nine and shot tied for the second-lowest score of the day at five-over, 289. That was 10 shots better than Friday's first round for the Blue Devils.
Alabama continued to hold the team lead with an eight-over, 576, while Virginia (579), Oklahoma State (582), Vanderbilt (582), Georgia (583), North Carolina (585), Auburn (585), Arkansas (585), Tennessee (587) and Duke (588) rounded out the top 10.
After opening her day with three pars, Choi rolled in a seven-foot birdie on No 13 and a five-foot birdie on No. 15, while sandwiching in a bogey on No. 14 to get to one-under-par. She went on to play her final 12 holes at even par with a bogey on No. 3 and a four-foot birdie on the 317-yard, par four fifth. She hit 14 greens, 11 fairways and had 31 putts on the afternoon.
Sophomore Leona Maguire turned in a one-over-par, 72, to move up to tied 23rd overall with a 147. A product of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire was limited to only one birdie, which occurred on the 317-yard, par four fifth. She only suffered bogeys on the fourth and 15th holes. Maguire hit 10 fairways, 13 greens and had 32 putts.
Duke freshman Virginia Elena Carta had a slow start to her day with bogeys on No. 10 and No. 14, before collecting her first birdie on the 384-yard, par 16th. Carta, who is from Udine, Italy, had a bogey on the 17th, before making the turn at two-over, 37. She played her final nine holes at one-under-par with birdies on No. 1 and No. 5. Carta registered a key up-and-down on the 153-yard, par three eighth hole on her way to closing the day with a one-over, 72. She is tied 47th overall, after hitting 14 greens, nine fairways and rolling 33 putts.
Sophomore Gurbani Singh is tied 73rd with rounds of 77 and 75 for a two-day ledger of 152. Singh, a native of New Delhi, India, shot two-over on both the front and back nine along with registering one birdie on No. 5. Senior Celine Boutier continued her struggles with an 80 and she enters the final round tied 80th. Boutier, who is from Montrouge, France, was held without a birdie and shot six-over, 42, on the final nine. She hit eight fairways, six greens and had 31 putts.
As a team, Duke totaled eight birdies and now has 15 birdies over the two days of action.
The Blue Devils will kick off Sunday's final round beginning at 9:30 a.m., along with Southern California and South Carolina.
