HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Duke University junior
Sandy Choi carded an even-par, 71, Friday as the second-ranked Blue Devils opened the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at the 6,208-yard, par 71 Pete Dye Course at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
Choi is only four shots off the individual lead as Cheyenne Knight of Alabama, Alexandra Farnsworth of Vanderbilt and Lauren Coughlin of Virginia each carded rounds of four-under-par, 67.
A product of Seoul, South Korea, Choi opened her day with a bogey on the 389-yard, par four No. 1, but came back to total four straight pars and back-to-back birdies on No. 6 and No. 7 to move to one-under-par. She rolled in five-foot and 15-foot birdies to get to under par. A double-bogey on No. 9 to close the front nine dropped Choi to one-over-par. She played the final nine holes at one-under-par with a 10-foot birdie putt on the 501-yard, par five 15th. For the day, she hit 12 fairways, 13 greens and had 30 putts.
After returning to the top slot in the latest Golfweek Individual rankings this week, sophomore
Leona Maguire turned in a four-over-par, 75, in the first round and is tied 44th overall. She featured three bogeys on the front nine to go along with five pars and a birdie on the 391-yard, par four seventh hole. On the back nine, she was given a double-bogey on No. 12. She had a birdie on No. 14 and bogey on No. 17 to close the day. Maguire hit 13 greens, eight fairways and had 34 putts on the day.
Senior
Celine Boutier kicked off her day with eight straight pars, before suffering a bogey on No. 9 to make the turn with a one-over-par, 37. She started the back nine with a par, birdie on the 345-yard, par four 11th and then had back-to-back bogeys on No. 12 and No. 13 to drop to two-over-par. Boutier had a triple-bogey on the 172-yard, par three 17th to finish off the day with a 76. She is tied 50th, after hitting 13 greens, 10 fairways and rolling 34 putts.
Being held without a birdie, sophomore
Gurbani Singh signed for six bogeys and 12 pars on her way to totaling a six-over, 77. She is tied 57th overall with 36 holes remaining.
Freshman
Virginia Elena Carta is tied 68th overall with an 18-hole ledger of 78 Friday. Carta, who hails from Udine, Italy, carded just one birdie on the day, which came on No. 17. She hit 11 greens, 11 fairways and had 36 putts.
As a team, Duke sits in 10th place overall with a 15-over, 299, during round one. Alabama opened with the team lead firing a six-under, 278, while Virginia (281), Vanderbilt (282), Arkansas (289), North Carolina (290), Oklahoma State (292), Tennessee (295), Auburn (296), Southern California (297) and Duke (299) rounded out the top 10.
As a team, Duke was limited to only seven birdies Friday.
The Blue Devils will kick off Saturday's second round beginning at 10:10 a.m., along with Wake Forest and Georgia off hole No. 10.
