PALOS VERDES, Calif. – The second-ranked Duke women's golf team opened the 2016 spring campaign Sunday with a one-over-par, 285, and is tied second overall at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge played at the 6,017-yard, par 71 Palos Verdes Golf Club.
Alabama opened with a six-under-par, 278, to take the team lead, while Duke (285), Washington (285), Florida (287), North Carolina (288), Arizona State (291), UCLA (293), Southern California (295), Oklahoma State (299) and Arizona (300) rounded out the top 10.
Duke's
Leona Maguire, currently the No. 1 ranked amateur golfer in the world, paced the Blue Devils with a two-under-par, 69, Sunday and is tied third overall. She is only one shot off individual leader Lexi Harkins of North Carolina (68).
Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, tallied four straight pars before she collected her first eagle of the season and third collegiately on the 475-yard, par five fifth hole. She featured an 80-yard blind shot into the green and hit her 52-degree wedge that went in for eagle. Maguire suffered her first bogey on No. 9 to make the turn, but went to three-under-par, after totaling birdies on No. 11 and No. 14. She closed with a bogey on No. 18 to finish with a 69. She hit 13 fairways, 13 greens and had 29 putts on the day.

Celine Boutier carded an even-par, 71, to kick off her spring action. She registered an even-par front nine with two birdies, two bogeys and five pars. Boutier then went under-par with a birdie on the 404-yard, par four 13th. She also had a bogey on her final hole to drop her back to even par for the day and is tied 11th.
Junior
Sandy Choi fired a 72 and freshman
Virginia Elena Carta added a 73 in round one for the Blue Devils. Choi, who is from Seoul, South Korea, had bogeys on No. 1 and No. 3 to open her day, but turned it around to play the final 15 holes at even par. She totaled birdies on No. 7, No. 13 and No. 18. Choi hit 12 fairways, nine greens and had 27 putts in her first round.
Carta, from Udine, Italy, played her first 13 holes at even par, but suffered back-to-back bogeys on No. 14 and No. 15. Choi is tied 17th overall, while Carta is tied 23rd.
Sophomore
Gurbani Singh turned in a six-over-par, 77, and is tied 50th. Playing as an individual, freshman
Lisa Maguire is tied 65th with a 79.
As a team, Duke netted 12 birdies on the day along with one eagle.
Duke will open the second round beginning at 1:12 p.m. (ET) along with Alabama and Washington.
