CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Two days after winning the women's 50-yard freestyle at the Carolina College Invitational, senior Kathryn Eckhart claimed her second individual event with a first-place showing in the 100 freestyle. Her performance highlighted another strong day of competition by Blue Devil swimmers to close out the three-day meet at Koury Natatorium.
Eckhart turned in a personal-best time of 50.14 in the 100 freestyle A final, moving up to fifth on Duke's all-time performance list. Junior Adriaan Venter led the men's team with a second-place finish, racing to the wall in 44.92.
“Those were great, great performances for Kathryn here at the meet,” said head coach Dan Colella. “She's trained really hard, she's been really committed to this season, and her for to finish up the meet with two wins like that is huge. She's been a great leader both in and out of the pool all year as one of the team captains. Kathryn has been really instrumental in helping this team grow this year, so it's always great to see someone reap all the benefits of their hard work.”
Junior Lindsay Schlichte started off the evening session by clocking a best time in the 1,650 freestyle. The Garden City, N.Y., native covered the mile in 16:53.35, good for fourth in the field and seventh in program history.
The Blue Devils then earned a pair of second-place finishes in the women's and men's 200 backstroke, as junior Liza Bragg went 2:00.04 and sophomore Alex Peña a personal-best 1:47.71. That mark ranked Peña fourth on Duke's all-time list.
Sophomore Abby Artmann headlined a trio of Blue Devils in the women's 200 breaststroke A final, placing third at 2:17.90, and senior Kenny Ng was second to the wall in the men's 200 butterfly (1:48.71).
“We have a large squad, so to have a large contingent here – in years past, it might have been half this size,” Colella said. “It was fun. The whole atmosphere, hats off to UNC for hosting a great meet this weekend … It's been an exciting meet.”
Up next, representatives from the men's and women's teams will head to Greensboro, N.C., for the 2016 ACC Championships. The women's swimming and both the women's and men's diving events will be contested Feb. 17-20 while the men's swimming events are set for Feb. 24-27 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
