BOSTON, Mass. – Racing at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston, Mass., Friday, senior Anima Banks headlined a small Blue Devil track & field squad that produced a number of stellar performances.
Kicking off the event, Banks placed second overall and finished as the top collegiate competitor in the 800, finishing only behind Nike's Lynsey Sharp. The Mamaroneck, N.Y., native crossed the finish line in 2:03.41 to set the Duke record in the event, surpassing Cydney Ross' mark of 2:04.52 set during the 2013 campaign. Banks' Duke record also ranks as the second-fastest time run this season in the NCAA, according to the national leaderboards heading into the weekend.
Up next for the Blue Devils, redshirt senior Teddi Maslowski and freshman India Lowe took to the track for the 60-meter hurdles, running times of 8.66 and 9.28 to place fifth and 36th, respectively.
The sprint duo of sophomore Maddy Price and junior Madeline Kopp rounded out the individual events for Duke in the 200. Racing against each other in the same heat, Price clocked a personal-best 24.26 to ultimately place 11th overall, followed by Kopp in 18th with a time of 24.57. Price narrowly missed setting the school record in the event, ranking No. 2 in the Duke records book and a fraction of a second behind Elizabeth Kerpon's 24.25 performance from last season.
With one event left on the docket for the Blue Devils, Maslowski, Kopp, Lowe and Price teamed up in the 4x400 and capped their time in Boston by winning the event with a combined time of 3:39.18. A season-best time and the second-fastest 4x400 showing in Duke history, the Blue Devil squad breezed to the finish line, holding more than an eight-second gap between them and second place.
The Blue Devils will continue competition next weekend with three meets on the schedule. A portion of the team will travel to Blacksburg, Va., for the Virginia Tech Challenge Feb. 19-20, while others will travel to the UCS Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., and the Millrose Games in New York, N.Y., Feb. 20.
