DURHAM, N.C. – The National College Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA) released the final Division I women's soccer rankings Tuesday with Duke earning a No. 7 listing for the 2016 campaign.
The Blue Devils registered a 15-5-3 overall and 7-2-1 ledger in ACC action, while advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship. It marked the seventh time over the last 10 years Duke advanced to the quarterfinals under the direction of head coach
Robbie Church.
Duke finished in the top 10 of the NSCAA poll for the fourth time out of the last six years.
Southern California, who claimed its second NCAA title, was No. 1, while West Virginia, Georgetown, North Carolina, South Carolina, Stanford, Duke, Auburn, BYU and Florida rounded out the top 10.
Led by a stellar defensive unit that accumulated 11 shutouts, including 10 by junior goalkeeper
EJ Proctor, the Blue Devils allowed only six goals over the final 14 matches.
Senior
Christina Gibbons continues to have the honors roll in as she Raleigh, N.C., native earned NSCAA First Team All-America, winner of the Senior CLASS Award, ACC Defensive Player of the Year, NSCAA First Team All-Southeast Region and is one of 15 finalists for the Hermann Trophy for National Player of the Year. The midfielder/defender tallied four goals and a team-high eight assists.
As a freshman,
Ella Stevens came in and made an immediate impact leading Duke with 10 goals and 26 points. A product of Grayson, Ga., Stevens led the Blue Devils and ranked second all-time on the Duke freshman record charts with five game-winning goals.
The Blue Devils will graduate some big parts of the recent success of the Blue Devils, including
Toni Payne,
Krysia Sikora,
Lizzy Raben and Gibbons, but will return eight starters in 2017.
