DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University forward Brian White headlined the Blue Devils' selections for postseason All-ACC awards, earning All-ACC second-team recognition. The honor is the first for the junior striker, while freshmen Suniel Veerakone and Max Moser were named to the ACC All-Freshman Team.
White, Duke's top point scorer this season, is one of eight forwards in the league voted to either the first or second team. On the All-Freshman squad, the Blue Devils are one of four schools to have multiple players selected.
A native of Flemington, N.J., White started all 17 games for the Blue Devils and ranked fourth overall in minutes played. He led all scorers with five goals and four assists for a career-best 14 points, ranking tied for 10th in the ACC.
In his 17 outings, White tallied three game-winning goals, including the 90th minute strike that lifted the Blue Devils over No. 9 UCLA 1-0 in Los Angeles. He also tallied the overtime winner against Elon. White, also possessing the ability to find the open man, provided the game-tying assist in Duke's 2-1 come-from-behind win over NC State. For his career, White has played in 53 games with 43 starts and compiled 34 points from 13 goals and eight assists.
Rookie midfielders, Veerakone and Moser were outstanding in their first seasons as Blue Devils. They accounted for 48 percent of the team's assists, combining for 12 of the 25.
Veerakone was the engine to Duke's midfield in 2016, finishing his first season with three goals and five assists for 11 points. Ranked 23rd among all freshmen by Top Drawer Soccer, the Michigan native scored two goals on free kicks in a 5-1 win over UNC Asheville. He added a third free-kick score in the closing minutes to give Duke the 2-1 win at NC State. His five assists are seventh in the ACC and ranked tied for 17th among all freshmen nationally. Overall, Veerakone started 14 of 15 games and played 1,372 minutes to rank fifth on the team.
Possessing an incredible ability to serve quality crosses from the flanks and corner flags, Moser led all Blue Devils with seven assists in 2016. His total ranks second in the ACC and is tied for third among all freshmen nationally. Only five freshmen in Division I soccer have at least seven assists. A starter in 16 of 17 games, Moser registered the tying assist in a 1-1 draw with San Diego and also had the service that led to the game winner over Notre Dame during the regular season. Overall, Moser played in all 17 games and amassed 1,326 minutes to rank seventh on the team.
Duke finished the year with a 7-8-2 overall record and went 2-5-1 in ACC play. The Blue Devils fell to Notre Dame in overtime of the ACC Championship first round, 3-2.
