FLUSHING, N.Y. -- Freshman Meible Chi, fueled by a straight set victory over the No. 2 singles player in the country, extended her run at the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships and reached the semifinal round of the tournament Friday.
Chi opened the day with a statement victory over second-ranked and third-seeded Luisa Stefani of Pepperdine, as the Weston, Fla., native posted a 7-6 (3), 7-6 (13) win in a round of 16 match.
The two opponents proved evenly matched throughout the contest, as Chi and Stefani never gained more than a two-game advantage over the other in the opening set. After Chi and Stefani played to a 6-6 score, the two competitors went into a tiebreak. With the score knotted at 3-3 in the first-set tiebreak, Chi won four consecutive points to earn a one-set advantage. Chi's resilience was on full display during the second set, as she fell behind 3-1 but battled back to tie the set at 3-3. Chi and Stefani would trade games throughout the latter stages of the second set, once again leading to a tiebreak. Stefani stormed out to a 6-3 lead in the tiebreak, but undeterred, Chi won three consecutive points to extend the set. After exchanging numerous points, bringing the score to 13-13, Chi won the final two points necessary to earn the victory and advance.
Chi posted her second win of the day to reach the semifinal round of the tournament after defeating Florida's Josie Kuhlman in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Kuhlman, the 89th-ranked singles player in the country, took an early 1-0 lead, but Chi, as she has done all season, settled in and won six of the next seven games. In the second set, Chi once again fell behind early, 2-1, but responded with stellar play, not surrendering another game in the second set en route to her 14th victory of the fall season.
Chi is scheduled to face top-seeded Francesca Di Lorenzo of Ohio State Saturday, with the match set for 10:30 a.m.
The Duke tandem of junior Samantha Harris and sophomore Ellyse Hamlin returned to the courts Friday for the women's second round doubles consolation, where the duo faced California's pair of Olivia Hauger and Karla Popovic. Harris and Hamlin fell in a tight contest, 7-6 (5), 6-2. The Duke team stormed out to a 4-1 lead in the first set before Hauger and Popovic responded by winning four straight games to take a 5-4 lead. The Blue Devil doubles pair won two of the next three games to force a tiebreak. Harris and Hamlin were unable to gain momentum in the tiebreak however, falling, 7-5. Hauger and Popovic seized control of the match in the second set, taking a commanding 4-0 lead that proved insurmountable for the Blue Devil duo. Harris and Hamlin's record dropped to 6-2 on the year with the result.
