DURHAM, N.C. – Duke women's lacrosse head coach Kerstin Kimel and the Blue Devil staff welcomed the addition of six freshmen and one graduate student to the program for the 2017 campaign. Attacker Sam DeBellis comes to Duke from Cold Harbor Spring, N.Y.

Prior to Duke: DeBellis joined the Duke program after competing in the North vs. South All-Star Game as an Under Armour All-American. She guided Cold Spring Harbor to the Long Island Championship as a sophomore and was an Under Armour Underclass All-American in addition to twice earning All-America laurels from US Lacrosse. DeBellis concluded her senior campaign as a two-time US Lacrosse first team All-American, and with 181 career goals and 75 career assists.
What is your best lacrosse memory?
SD: Winning the Long Island Championship my sophomore year.
When did you start playing lacrosse?
SD: I started playing lacrosse in third grade with my town team. All of my soccer and basketball friends were on the same team. In fourth grade we joined a summer travel team. It was a lot of fun traveling and playing with my best friends. Six of us completed our high school careers together …we had a great run over the years.
Who has had the largest impact on your life?
SD: My parents have had the biggest impact on my life thus far as their love and support has provided me with the opportunity to pursue my lifelong dreams.
Why did you choose Duke?
SD: I love the rich traditions that Duke represents both academically and athletically. I felt an immediate positive connection to Coach Kimel and the coaching staff from my first visit.
What are your goals for your collegiate career?
SD: To improve overall as a player, be a great teammate and help my team succeed in any way possible.

Pregame ritual/superstition: I always eat a green apple before a game and wear the same sports bra.
If you were to play another sport, what would it be? Field hockey
Interesting fact about yourself: I used to have an obsession with Spider-Man.
Best advice you've ever received: “Control what you can control. Preparation, competitiveness, attitude, being a great teammate…” @ShaneBattier.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I see myself living and working in a big city and hopefully close to starting my own family.
