DURHAM, N.C.— Duke University senior
Christina Gibbons has been selected one of 15 semifinalists for the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Trophy, which was announced Tuesday by the National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA).
The MAC Hermann Trophy, the most coveted individual honor in NCAA Division I soccer, has been awarded annually since 1967. Three finalists will be named December 14 at the conclusion of voting by NCAA Division I soccer coaches. The 2016 MAC Hermann Trophy banquet will be held at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis Jan. 6, 2017 to formally announce this year's winner.
Gibbons, a native of Raleigh, N.C., was the 2016 ACC Defensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-ACC honoree for the Blue Devils. She was excellent at both the defensive and midfield slots helping lead Duke to a 15-5-3 overall and 7-2-1 record in the ACC, before falling in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship at West Virginia over the weekend.
Along with Gibbons on the list were Morgan Andrews (Southern California), Maddie Bauer (Stanford), Kadeisha Buchanan (West Virginia), Rachel Corboz (Georgetown), Ashley Hatch (BYU), Rachel Hill (UConn), Savannah Jordan (Florida), Kaleigh Kurtz (South Carolina), Ashley Lawrence (West Virginia), Savannah McCaskill (South Carolina), Margaret Purce (Harvard), Stephanie Ribeiro (UConn), Alexis Shaffer (Virginia) and Andi Sullivan (Stanford).
Just the third Blue Devil to receive the ACC Defensive Player of the Year honor from the league, Gibbons helped guide the Duke defense to 11 shutouts on the season. A steady defender and dynamic offensive threat, Gibbons totaled a team-high eight assists to go along with four goals, including two game-winners. The 2016 Academic All-America's eight assists ranks tied second in the ACC.
Gibbons becomes just the second Blue Devil to be named a semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy as Natasha Anasi received the honor in 2012.
