PITTSBURGH -- Pitt running back James Conner scored two touchdowns as Pittsburgh defeated Duke, 56-14, on Saturday at Heinz Field.
Duke quarterback Daniel Jones completed 28-of-46 passes for 243 yards and one touchdown, but the Blue Devil rushing attack was limited to just 25 net yards. T.J. Rahming had 10 receptions for 116 yards while Chris Taylor hauled in the first touchdown pass of his career – a six-yard completion from Jones that tied the game, 7-7, in the opening quarter.
Conner found the end zone from one yard out in the first quarter and again in the third to give him 50 rushing touchdowns for his career, breaking the ACC record of 49 set by N.C. State's Ted Brown between 1975 and 1978. A year removed from a cancer diagnosis that forced him into months of debilitating treatment, Conner finished with 101 yards rushing as the Panthers avoided a letdown following an emotional upset of Clemson last week.
Quadree Henderson returned a punt 65 yards for a score and added a 52-yard sprint for Pitt (7-4, 4-3 ACC) while Nate Peterman threw three touchdowns.
Duke (4-7, 1-6 ACC) received a defensive score when cornerback Bryon Fields returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown. Fields also had an interception return for a score against Tulane in 2014.
Pitt never trailed and broke it open in the third quarter when Conner blasted over for his record-setting score and Henderson followed by taking a kick from Duke's Danny Stirt, shaking a couple tackles then sprinting down the right sideline to give the Panthers a 42-14 lead.
Duke closes the regular season at Miami next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. and the game will be televised by ESPN2.
